Yes—Old Spice packaging reportedly displayed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie months before Nintendo announced that title on September 12, 2025. The cans were not an official Old Spice announcement, and the early image was initially doubted; the later title announcement made the packaging look like a genuine leak.
What was on the Old Spice cans?
An image circulating before the announcement reportedly showed two Old Spice cans with Luigi and Yoshi artwork and the words “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” VGC said the image had appeared on Reddit about two months earlier and that some viewers dismissed it as fake. One reason for the skepticism was a Tostarenan character pictured on a can: it is associated with Super Mario Odyssey, not Super Mario Galaxy. These are details reported about the image, not confirmation of characters or plot in the film. VGC’s September 12, 2025 report describes the image and the initial doubts; GamesRadar’s announcement-day report also recounts the packaging.
How the leak was corroborated
The packaging was one piece of a trail, rather than standalone proof. VGC reported that Procter & Gamble had registered Canadian trademarks in July 2025 for five scent names: Brooklyn Bounce, Desert Detour, Cosmic Quest, Castle Crush, and Space Mischief. It also reported that Universal registered supermariogalaxy.movie on September 3, and NBCUniversal registered two other Super Mario Galaxy domains on September 10. Those trademark and domain details were reported by VGC; the underlying registry and domain records are not reproduced in the coverage. Domain registrations alone would not establish a movie title, since companies can reserve web addresses in advance.
On September 12, 2025, Nintendo announced The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at Nintendo Direct, as contemporaneous coverage from GamesRadar and VGC reported. The announced title matched the words reportedly printed on the earlier cans. That match is why the image is now reasonably described as a packaging leak, though the reports do not establish who first found the cans or who posted the image.

Was the Old Spice Mario collection real?
Yes. In a March 9, 2026 report, TechRadar described a released Old Spice collection inspired by the movie. It listed five scents—Cosmic Quest, Desert Detour, Castle Crush, Brooklyn Bounce, and Space Mischief—across deodorant sticks, body spray, 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, and body lotion. That later release helps explain the branded packaging, but it does not independently authenticate every detail of the earlier image. TechRadar reported US retail availability starting at $7.97 at the time of its article; that is a historical price, not a current price or stock check.

The strongest conclusion is narrow: contemporary reports described Old Spice cans bearing the film’s eventual title before Nintendo’s announcement, and later coverage documented a movie-inspired product collection. The leak does not establish the film’s plot, character appearances, or why the title appeared on packaging before it was announced. Nor do the cited reports identify the original poster or confirm the image through an official Old Spice or Nintendo statement.
