Supercell’s relationship with Space Ape developed in stages: it first backed the London-based developer in 2017, reportedly invested another $37 million in 2022, and later acquired it. Supercell’s portfolio says the acquisition happened in 2025, while a November 2024 company announcement described a 100% acquisition. Supercell says its London studio opened in early 2025 and that Space Ape joined forces as part of Supercell London.
How Supercell’s relationship with Space Ape changed
Space Ape was founded in 2012, according to Supercell Investments’ company profile. The relationship with Supercell began as investment, not ownership: the portfolio says Supercell first backed the studio in 2017.

2017: Supercell backs Space Ape
The 2017 backing began a longer relationship between the companies. Supercell Investments now lists Space Ape as an alumni investee company and says it was acquired by Supercell in 2025.
2022: a reported $37 million follow-on investment
Supercell Investments’ news index lists a VentureBeat headline dated 7 July 2022: “Supercell invests $37M more in Space Ape Games.” The $37 million figure is the reported additional investment cited in that headline; it is not an acquisition price, and the index entry does not establish transaction terms.

2024–2025: acquisition and integration
In November 2024, Supercell announced a 100% acquisition in a company post and linked coverage. Its current portfolio retrospectively gives the acquisition year as 2025 and says Space Ape joined forces as part of Supercell London. Those sources establish the announcement and the portfolio’s stated year, but not the exact completion date or purchase price.
When did Supercell open its London studio?
Supercell’s current London careers page says the studio doors opened in early 2025. This is the studio-opening date; it should not be confused with the 2022 follow-on investment or treated as evidence that a London office opened in 2024.
Supercell describes the London studio as working across new and existing games. It gives Hay Day as an example of a team operating across Helsinki and London, illustrating a multi-location setup rather than an exclusively London-based operation. The company says fewer than 80 people share one floor; that describes the people on that floor, not necessarily the total London workforce.
Why invest first and integrate later?
The documented sequence shows a shift from financial backing to full ownership and studio integration. The sources establish that Supercell invested in Space Ape before acquiring it, and that Space Ape became part of Supercell London. They do not give a detailed explanation of the commercial motives behind the investment or acquisition, so claims about strategy beyond those stated facts would be speculative.

Is Space Ape still a separate studio?
In Supercell’s current portfolio, Space Ape is an acquired company and part of Supercell London, rather than a separate investee. The transition was also described by Space Ape co-founder John Earner, who wrote: “As of this morning, Space Ape Games is officially Supercell London. We’ll be shutting the office for a transformation—orange to black—before relaunching in March. And after 13 incredible years, I’ll be stepping away from the biz next week for a much-needed break.” His post describes the organizational change and his departure, but it does not provide acquisition terms.
Supercell characterizes the London studio as “small enough that it still feels like a tiny startup tucked inside Supercell.” That is the company’s own description, not an independent assessment of the studio’s size or working culture.
What public company records do—and do not—show
Companies House records for Supercell UK Ltd list the company as active at First Floor, 100 New Oxford Street, London. The filing history records SPACE APE LIMITED as a previous company name through 22 October 2025. These are legal-entity and registered-office details; the registered address alone does not establish where the studio’s staff work.
