Subnautica 2 reached Steam on May 14, 2026, but it launched in Early Access, not as a finished game. That means the alien-ocean survival adventure is playable now, while its content and polish remain in development—and Unknown Worlds says the timeline for reaching the full version is uncertain.
Is Subnautica 2 out on Steam?
Yes. Steam lists Subnautica 2 as released on May 14, 2026, with Unknown Worlds Entertainment as both developer and publisher. The studio announced a launch time of 8:00 a.m. PDT / 15:00 UTC that day and named Steam, Epic Games, and Xbox as storefronts. Steam’s listing is the place to check availability on Steam; consult your chosen store for availability and current pricing elsewhere.
Unknown Worlds announced a US launch price of $29.99, with prices localized by region. That is the studio’s announced launch price, not a promise of the current price in every country or on every storefront.
What is the catch with Early Access?
The Steam version is incomplete and may change as development continues. Steam cautions that “Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further.” Unknown Worlds estimates the Early Access period may last about two to three years, while stressing that the duration is difficult to predict. The studio plans a fuller, more polished release with more content; it has said additions may include biomes, creatures, craftables, features, narrative, bug fixes, and optimization. Those are development plans, not dated guarantees.

The current Steam description presents the game as an alien-world survival adventure built around exploration, tools, customizable bases, and a Tadpole submersible. You can play alone or online with up to three friends. Buying during Early Access means playing the current build rather than waiting for all planned content and polish. Steam also says the price will increase after Early Access, but that does not establish the eventual price or guarantee that buying now is cheaper in every region.

Unknown Worlds has also made an opt-in Experimental branch available on Steam and Xbox for players who want to try pre-release builds. These builds are more likely to contain bugs, potentially including game-breaking problems, and saves cannot be transferred between Experimental and the main branch. It is a separate, more volatile preview path—not the standard Early Access build. Read the studio’s Experimental branch guidance before opting in.

Why was the launch delayed?
Unknown Worlds said community playtests had generated positive feedback about the environment, creatures, story, and general direction, while also revealing areas to improve. The studio said it wanted more time to respond to that feedback and add content before the first Early Access release. That is the developer’s stated explanation for the delay. The game’s launch came amid a dispute over Unknown Worlds’ leadership and operational control. In its Phase One opinion, the Delaware Court of Chancery found that Krafton breached the relevant agreement by terminating key employees without valid cause and improperly taking operational control of Unknown Worlds. The court ordered Edward Gill reinstated as CEO and restored his operational control rights over the Early Access launch. It also extended the base earnout testing period by 258 days, to September 15, 2026; the opinion says Fortis retained a contractual right to extend it further, to March 15, 2027.
