Is the Switch 2 Nintendo’s Most Expensive Console After Inflation?

Switch 2 ranks among Nintendo’s priciest consoles after inflation, but bundles, configurations, and the comparison date change the answer.

In the U.S., the Switch 2 is one of Nintendo’s most expensive consoles when launch prices are adjusted for inflation—but a definitive all-time ranking depends on what counts as the console’s price. Nintendo’s U.S. MSRP rose from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. Earlier comparisons that put some Nintendo launch packages above the Switch 2 included games, so they are not direct hardware-only comparisons.

Is the Switch 2 Nintendo’s most expensive console?

It is among Nintendo’s most expensive, but “the most expensive” is not a settled all-time ranking. The answer changes depending on whether the comparison uses hardware alone or a package with a game, which console configuration is counted, and the inflation-adjustment date.

In an April 2025 analysis, Max Frequency concluded that Switch 2 had the highest inflation-adjusted hardware-only launch price in its comparison. The analysis also identified three earlier launch packages that exceeded Switch 2’s then-$449.99 U.S. hardware price after adjustment: an NES Deluxe bundle, an SNES bundle with Super Mario World, and Wii U Deluxe with Nintendo Land. These are the author’s calculations and selections, not an official Nintendo or U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranking. Read the Max Frequency comparison.

How much is the Switch 2 after inflation?

There is no single timeless inflation-adjusted figure. Nintendo of America announced that the U.S. MSRP would increase from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026, citing market conditions expected to continue over the medium to long term. The original Switch price was not changing in that notice. The $449.99 price was the launch-era U.S. MSRP; it is not the current U.S. MSRP. Nintendo’s U.S. price notice.

  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

To compare a launch price in today’s dollars, first specify the inflation measure and its periods. The BLS publishes CPI databases and an inflation calculator for comparing dollar buying power over time. A meaningful console comparison should identify the CPI series, the launch-price period, and the target month and year, then apply the same method to each sourced price. The BLS resource does not itself provide a Nintendo console ranking. BLS CPI databases and calculator.

Which Nintendo console cost the most at launch?

The answer depends on whether “cost” means an unbundled system or a launch package. Max Frequency’s April 2025 analysis gives these examples of prior bundles, expressed in April 2025 dollars:

Launch package Original price cited by Max Frequency Adjusted price in April 2025 dollars
Nintendo 64 plus Super Mario 64 $266.98 $544.17
Wii U Basic plus New Super Mario Bros. U $359.98 $501.41

Those figures are the author’s calculations, not official Nintendo or BLS values, and they describe packages that include games. They therefore cannot be compared as though they were prices for bare hardware. The analysis says the Wii U Basic hardware and Nintendo 64 were the closest hardware-only comparisons in its selection, but it does not establish a complete official ranking across every Nintendo home-console generation.

Does the Switch 2 price include a game?

The $499.99 figure in Nintendo of America’s 2026 notice is the U.S. MSRP of the Switch 2 system, not the Mario Kart World set price announced at launch in Japan. Nintendo’s April 2025 Japanese announcement listed a ¥49,980 MSRP for the Japanese-language system and ¥53,980 for a Mario Kart World set, and gave June 5, 2025 as the release date. Those yen prices are Japanese launch figures; they should not be substituted for U.S. pricing. Nintendo’s launch announcement.

  • Region: Keep U.S. prices separate from Japanese yen prices and from any other regional market.
  • Hardware versus bundle: A package price includes a game; compare it with another package or remove the game value using a documented method.
  • Configuration: Basic and deluxe versions are not interchangeable. A premium configuration may cost more without representing the base system’s price.
  • Inflation period: State the CPI series and the target month and year. Different endpoints produce different adjusted amounts.
