Which Super Mario RPG are the reviews about?
These scores concern the Nintendo Switch remake, not the 1996 Super Nintendo Entertainment System original. Nintendo’s U.S. and UK product pages identify the Switch edition and give its release date as November 17, 2023. Nintendo classifies it as a JRPG.
Nintendo UK describes the adventure as a quest to repair the wish-granting Star Road with “a group of unlikely heroes.” That is Nintendo’s promotional description, rather than a critic’s assessment.

Metacritic also showed an 8.0 user score from 527 user-submitted ratings in the observed title-page snapshot. This is a separate audience rating, not part of the critic Metascore. Scores and counts can change; the figures here describe the pages as observed in 2026.

What do critics praise, and what reservations appear?
The review excerpts visible on Metacritic highlight the remake’s charm, refreshed visuals, music and animation, and its faithfulness to the original. The praise also suggests appeal for both returning players and newcomers. Those are themes in the displayed excerpts, not a tally of every review.

For the experience itself, useful questions include how much you value fidelity to the original, refreshed presentation, and the combat and exploration as they play for a newcomer.
