In Dark Souls III, the Storm Ruler is a greatsword found beside Yhorm the Giant’s throne in the Profaned Capital. Its Storm King skill is designed to deal heavy damage to Yhorm: two-hand the weapon, charge the skill, then release the storm attack. Its special effect does not make it a general-purpose weapon against other giants.
Where to find the Storm Ruler
Pick it up in Yhorm the Giant’s boss arena, near his throne. You do not need to bring it into the fight beforehand; it is available inside the encounter area. The Dark Souls III wiki’s Storm Ruler entry covers the weapon and its arena placement.
How to use Storm King against Yhorm
- Pick up the Storm Ruler near the throne in Yhorm’s arena.
- Two-hand the weapon. The special attack is performed from a two-handed stance.
- Hold the skill input to charge Storm King. The charge takes time; do not expect an immediate attack.
- Release the attack input to discharge the storm at Yhorm. The storm attack is especially damaging to him.
Exact controller buttons vary by platform and control configuration, so use the skill and attack inputs shown by your own control setup rather than relying on a universal button label. A Japanese Dark Souls III reference database describes the two-handed stance, held skill input, and attack input sequence.
What the Storm Ruler is—and is not—good for
The weapon’s standout effect is specific to Yhorm. The cited Dark Souls III weapon notes say its special effect does not apply to other giants. Upgrading the weapon also does not improve Storm King’s bonus damage against Yhorm. Treat it as a boss-specific answer to this encounter, not as a broadly effective anti-giant weapon.

Item description and the “dear friend”
“Greatsword with a broken blade, also known as the Giantslayer for the residual strength of storm that brings giants to their knees. Yhorm the Giant once held two of these, but gave one to the humans that doubted him, and left the other to a dear friend before facing his fate as a Lord of Cinder.”
The wording is reproduced by the Dark Souls III wiki. The wiki interprets the “dear friend” as most likely Siegward of Catarina, but the item description itself does not identify that friend by name.

Dark Souls III and Demon’s Souls have different Storm Rulers
The name is shared by separate weapons in the two games. In Dark Souls III, the Storm Ruler is found in Yhorm’s arena in the Profaned Capital and its storm attack is used against Yhorm. In Demon’s Souls, a different Storm Ruler is associated with the Storm King encounter in the Shrine of Storms.
