Its HD presentation and conveniences are welcome; the larger question is whether the original stories and systems still work for you. Reviews suggest they do, especially in the more expansive Suikoden II, though the first game’s brisk pace comes with less-developed characters and plot.
What is included, and where can you play it?
The collection contains Suikoden and Suikoden II. Konami launched it on March 6, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. Konami’s launch announcement also names PC availability through Microsoft Games and Epic. Storefront availability can vary by region, so check the current store page for your platform.

What does the HD Remaster change?
Konami describes updated backgrounds and pixel-art presentation, added visual effects such as lighting, clouds, and animated shadows, and redrawn HD character portraits. Junko Kawano, a character designer on the original Suikoden, redrew the portraits for the first game’s remaster. The publisher also lists environmental sound additions, HD battle sound effects, a dialogue log, auto-battle, and double-speed battles. Nintendo and Steam list autosave, battle fast-forward, and a conversation log.
#1 Best Overall
- Features of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars
- All background illustrations have been upgraded to HD & updated effects breath new life into pixel art
- New environmental sounds effects to immerse yourself in this fantasy world
- Battle SFX are also now HD and add a new level of realism
- Newly added Auto-Save, Battle Fast Forward, and Conversation Log
Those are feature descriptions, not a guarantee that every change will matter equally to every player. GameSpot’s review calls out visual updates, faster battles, a dialogue log that can hold up to 100 text boxes, very fast loading, and bug fixes in both games. The reviewer considered the additions useful but limited, with some quality-of-life issues left unresolved. That is GameSpot’s assessment, not a cross-platform performance finding. Konami’s feature announcement, the Steam listing, and GameSpot’s review detail these changes.
Do the original games still hold up?
Suikoden: brisk and appealing, but rushed
GameSpot describes the first game as a brisk, pleasant RPG, with smooth turn-based combat and humor. Its main reservation is that character and plot development feel rushed; it also finds the army clashes underdeveloped. The pace can be an advantage if you want a relatively quick-moving classic, but it leaves less room for the cast and story to build depth.

Suikoden II: more room for its story
GameSpot judges Suikoden II larger and stronger in storytelling, with more space for characters and plotlines to develop. That makes the sequel the collection’s stronger draw for players prioritizing narrative depth, while the first game remains part of the appeal for its pace and place alongside the second.
Nintendo Life’s review of the European Nintendo Switch version emphasizes the games’ stories of war, tyranny, hope, relationships, and morally difficult choices. Alana Hagues describes the remasters as smoother and snappier while finding that they retain the originals’ core appeal. This is a distinct review perspective on the Switch version, not evidence that performance is identical on every platform. Read Nintendo Life’s Switch review.

Who should play this collection?
- Play it if: you want both original games in one release, value their stories and characters, or welcome faster battles and a conversation log when revisiting older RPGs.
- Temper expectations if: you want a substantial redesign, or expect the remaster to resolve every older design limitation. GameSpot’s review finds the changes restrained and notes remaining quality-of-life issues.
- Choose based on what you value: the first game offers a brisker adventure, while GameSpot sees the sequel as the stronger, more developed story. Nintendo Life’s review offers a warmer view of how the remastered pair plays and feels on Switch.
Which version should you buy?
The collection is announced for Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, but the reviewed perspectives here do not establish a full platform-by-platform performance comparison. Choose based on your preferred system and verify the current regional store page for availability, edition, and format. If you want a physical copy, confirm that a retailer actually lists one for your platform and region; an announcement of physical editions does not establish current inventory.
