There is no single best party for every boss in Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. Build around the characters available at that point, cover physical damage, magic and healing, then adjust for the encounter’s forced party members and mechanics. The matchups below are reported by a guide for the original PlayStation game; they are useful tactical guidance, but have not been independently confirmed for the HD Remaster.
How to choose a boss team
Keep the Hero in your party and aim for a workable balance of damage and survival. Compare characters by who is available, their weapon damage and sharpening, their rune options, and whether the boss rewards a particular element or attack order. A strong attacker is not always the best pick if the fight needs another healer or defensive support.
Use range and formation deliberately
Konami describes three attack ranges in the remaster: S-range characters must be in the front row to attack, M-range characters can attack from the back row but cannot hit enemy backliners, and L-range characters can attack any enemy. Check the formation before a fight so that a back-row position does not silence an S-range attacker. Konami’s battle system overview also confirms turn-based combat, speed options and auto-battle; those conveniences do not replace choosing a party for the boss’s mechanics.
How to read the matchups below
Elemental weaknesses, resistances and special mechanics are attributed to the consulted PlayStation-era boss guide, not presented as verified remaster data. Character availability, runes and equipment can depend on story progress and earlier choices, so use the tactical role as the priority when a named character or rune is unavailable.

#1 Best Overall
Golem
Recommended approach: Use the strongest early-game attackers you have—typically the Hero, Ted and Pahn—and keep Cleo available to use Medicine if needed. The guide identifies Golem as weak to Lightning and resistant to Fire and Wind, so prioritize Lightning if you have a suitable option. Pahn and Gremio can use Talisman Attack. Upgrade weapons and armor if the fight is proving difficult. The boss guide reports these matchups.
Soldier Ants and Queen Ant
Recommended approach: Treat this as a scripted survival encounter, not a damage check. The guide says Soldier Ants respawn and the fight ends after three rounds, while the Queen Ant battle is unwinnable. Defend and use Medicine when necessary; spending turns trying to eliminate the recurring ants will not win the encounter. The guide describes the encounter as scripted.
Varkas and Sydonia
Target order: Defeat Sydonia first because the guide reports that he has less HP. It also describes Sydonia as resistant to Fire and Varkas as vulnerable to it, so do not assume Cleo’s Fire Rune is equally useful against both. Talisman Attack can help; after Sydonia falls, focus on Varkas. The target and elemental notes are guide-reported.

Zombie Dragon
Recommended approach: The guide reports a Fire weakness, a damaging attack against the whole party and immunity to Soul Eater’s instant-death effect. Cleo with a Fire Rune is a strong damage choice if available, but bring more than one way to heal—such as Medicine users or a Water Rune—so you can recover after the breath attack. The Hero’s speed can help get an item used promptly. These mechanics come from the PlayStation-era guide.
Gigantes
Recommended approach: Valeria and Kirkis are mandatory in the guide’s described scenario. It reports that Gigantes is immune to Fire, weak to Wind and Thunder, and uses a party-wide Fire attack. Use Valeria’s Falcon Rune and Kirkis’s attacks, sharpening Kirkis’s weapon if possible. A Wind- or Thunder-capable caster such as Luc is a useful flexible slot; a Fire Rune user can help mitigate the incoming Fire damage, and a backup healer adds resilience. The boss details are guide-reported.
Dragon
Recommended approach: This is an attrition fight with a story-limited party. The guide reports a Wind weakness. Sharpen the main attackers’ weapons, use Valeria’s Falcon Rune, and add Wind Rune damage or rune pieces if available. Assign a character with lower physical damage to healing so the stronger attackers can keep pressure on the Dragon. The weakness and party notes come from the guide.
Rank #3
Anji, Kanak and Leonardo
Recommended approach: Favor physical attacks, unite attacks or neutral-damage spells instead of building the plan around one element. The guide describes alternating elemental resistances, an early mandatory party and a five-round time limit. Later attempts may offer more party flexibility. Watch for concentrated damage on one ally while you work through the targets. The time limit and resistance pattern are guide-reported.
Neclord: first encounter
Recommended approach: Do not spend resources trying to win. The guide describes the first Neclord battle in Warriors’ Village as unwinnable; survive as best you can or allow the scripted loss. The guide identifies this as an unwinnable encounter.

Recommended approach: Have Viktor hit Neclord first; the guide says that hit is needed to make him vulnerable. Afterward, emphasize physical damage because Neclord is reported to have strong magic resistance. The guide also reports a Light weakness and damaging area attacks, so use Light only if an appropriate source is available and prepare Water/Flowing or defensive Earth support to help the party withstand incoming damage. These special conditions are reported by the boss guide.
Rank #4
Crystal Core
Recommended approach: The party is constrained by four mandatory members, according to the guide. It reports weaknesses to Water and Earth and warns that the exposed-core phase is dangerous. Use those elements if available, preserve healing, and concentrate attacks once the outer layer breaks so the vulnerable final phase ends quickly. The phase and weakness details are guide-reported.
Shell Venus
Recommended approach: The guide reports weaknesses to Earth and Lightning, very high HP and substantial party-wide damage. Use Lightning attacks and Earthquake if available, but keep a Flowing or Cyclone healer ready. Because another boss follows in the dungeon, avoid exhausting every resource on Shell Venus. The encounter notes are from the guide.

Recommended approach: The guide reports no elemental weakness and heavy magic damage against the whole party. Favor strong non-elemental single-target attacks, unite attacks or Judgment, and heal as needed rather than relying on an elemental counter. It also warns that Viktor has low magic defense, so watch his HP closely. The resistance and damage notes are guide-reported.

Ain Gide
Recommended approach: The guide reports no weakness and slow, mostly single-target attacks, making this a more forgiving window for healing than the repeated area-damage fights. Use your strongest attacks and heal when needed. The HD Remaster walkthrough recommends resting and upgrading before the final palace approach. Boss notes and the remaster walkthrough provide the respective encounter and progression guidance.
Golden Hydra
Target order: Focus the Right Head first. The guide says it can heal and revive the other heads, making it a higher priority than simply spreading damage across all three. The heads have different resistances, so use strong single-target attacks and avoid elements the relevant head resists. The head mechanics and resistances are reported by the guide.
Quick party checklist
- Check which characters the story makes available or requires before settling on a team.
- Keep enough physical damage to exploit weapon upgrades and avoid overreliance on a resisted element.
- Bring healing or defensive support when the boss has party-wide attacks; healing demand differs sharply between fights.
- Confirm attack ranges and row placement, especially for S-range characters.
- For scripted losses, timers, required opening hits or a healing target, follow the encounter mechanic before optimizing raw damage.
RPG Site’s general party advice likewise emphasizes balancing damage and survival rather than treating one roster as universally optimal. Its remaster walkthrough offers progression context, while its party guidance is available at RPG Site.
