Terraria 1.4.5 Item Hoppers Explained: Conveyor Belts and Wired Chests

In Terraria 1.4.5.0, a chest receiving a wire signal picks up nearby dropped items, while conveyor belts transport items and can carry them upward.

Terraria 1.4.5.0 does not describe a separate placeable “item hopper.” Instead, it gives chests a wire-triggered pickup behavior: when a chest receives a wire signal, it collects nearby dropped items. Conveyor belts do a different job, carrying items along a route; in 1.4.5.0, they can carry items upward too.

How item pickup works with a wired chest

The 1.4.5.0 update notes state: “When Chests receive a wire signal they now pick up all nearby dropped items. Great for automated farms!” In other words, the chest is the collector, and receiving a wire signal is the stated trigger. The notes do not specify a required circuit layout or timer interval.

The notes describe the drops as “nearby” but give no numeric collection radius. Do not rely on a particular distance without confirming it in your own platform and build.

What conveyor belts do in 1.4.5.0

Conveyor belts transport items along their route rather than collecting an area’s drops on a wire signal. The 1.4.5.0 update notes add the ability for belts to carry items upward. Where an item goes at a belt’s end can depend on the belt and surrounding tile placement; see the Conveyor Belt reference for the described route and endpoint behavior. Its speed information is tied to older desktop source code, so it should not be treated as a verified 1.4.5.0 speed.

Mechanism Best understood as Trigger or movement What is not established by the cited notes
Wired chest Collecting nearby dropped items A chest receiving a wire signal triggers pickup. The collection radius, item-selection rules, timing, and a mandatory wiring layout.
Conveyor belt Transporting items along a route Moves items along the belt; 1.4.5.0 adds upward item movement. A verified 1.4.5.0 speed constant.

Use the chest behavior when you want a signal-triggered pickup, and belts when you need to move items along a path. They address different parts of an item-handling setup rather than serving as interchangeable versions of one hopper block. The update’s wiring and conveyor details are in the Terraria 1.4.5.0 update notes.

Version and platform caveats

Version 1.4.5.0, titled “Bigger and Boulder,” was released on January 27, 2026, according to the Official Terraria Wiki version page. Platform histories can differ: the conveyor reference records the upward-carrying change for Desktop 1.4.5.0, while the console version history separately records a later split-screen hopper fix. That fix is a reason to check the exact console build when troubleshooting, not evidence that every console version has the same issue or behavior.

If a chest or belt does not behave as expected, first identify whether you are playing on desktop, console, or mobile and check the version history for that platform. The cited notes do not establish current feature parity across all platforms or later patches.
