The selection spans adventure, platforming, strategy, role-playing, multiplayer and more, with games released from 2017 onward alongside newer titles. It follows Engadget’s guide, updated July 28, 2025, and is organized by what you might want to play rather than ranked as an objective top 26.
How to choose a Switch game
Start with the kind of play you want: a focused solo story, a game to dip into for a few minutes, a demanding action challenge or something to share. Then check the player modes and edition on the specific store listing. Engadget’s guide says most Switch games are compatible with Switch 2, but that is not a guarantee for every game or edition; verify compatibility with Nintendo’s compatibility information before buying.

Nintendo’s 2025 roundup is explicitly a highlights list rather than a complete catalog of games playable on Switch 2. For current availability, platform labels and editions, check My Nintendo Store and the individual game page. Nintendo’s current must-play page includes both Switch and Switch 2 games, including Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom; price, format and upgrade details can change.
There is also a useful distinction between this evergreen selection and a best-games-of-2025 release ranking. Metacritic’s separate 2025 list covers games released on Switch or Switch 2 from January 1 through December 31, 2025, requires at least seven professional critic reviews, and ranks eligible games by Metascore. It answers a different question: which games launched that year received the strongest critic scores.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — open-world discovery

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — exploration and construction
Tears of the Kingdom expands the adventure into sky and underground regions and adds Ultrahand, a construction ability that lets players assemble objects to solve problems and traverse the world. Pick it for a more systemic, build-and-experiment take on open-world Zelda.
