Broken Toys, Episode 3 of The Walking Dead: The Final Season, is worth playing if you’re invested in Clementine’s story: contemporary reviews praised its tension and emotional peaks, but also noted frustrating gameplay and, in GameSpot’s review, frame-rate drops in busy scenes. The response was mixed rather than uniformly glowing, and the episode’s ending sets up the season finale.
What Episode 3 is, and where it fits
Broken Toys is the third episode of The Walking Dead: The Final Season. It continues the story after Episode 2 and leads into the season’s finale, making it a penultimate chapter in Clementine’s arc. GameSpot reported in its January 10, 2019 launch announcement that the episode was due January 15 on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. That is historical release information, not confirmation of current storefront availability. GameSpot’s release announcement.
This is a story-focused, choice-driven graphic adventure, not an action game built around combat. Your choices and conversations are part of how the episode develops its characters and stakes.
What reviewers liked—and where they disagreed
GameSpot: an intense build toward the finale
Justin Clark’s GameSpot review saw Broken Toys as building toward a highly tense closing stretch. It praised the episode’s comparatively hopeful tone and use of the series’ strengths, with particular enthusiasm for the final act and its high-stakes decisions. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way. Read GameSpot’s Broken Toys episode review.

RPGFan: engaging story, but uneven play and payoff
Jerry Williams’s RPGFan review, published January 15, 2019, was positive about the episode’s plot details and character appearances, which helped keep the story engaging. But it also described the gameplay as frustrating at points and found the response to Clementine’s fate lukewarm. That counterpoint makes “worth playing” a better verdict than calling the episode a clear triumph. Read RPGFan’s review.
Choices, exploration, and series context
Meristation’s Spanish-language review, updated January 21, 2019, describes the episode as picking up where Episode 2 ends. It discusses how Clementine treats a captive, how A.J. learns from those choices, and the mix of exploration, dialogue, action, and quick-time events. Meristation recommends playing the earlier games first for greater emotional context, while acknowledging that a newcomer can piece the story together later. That is useful advice, not a strict prerequisite. Read Meristation’s review (Spanish).

How the review scores vary by platform
The following historical Metacritic aggregates were reported in the Wikipedia overview cited for this episode. They are separate platform snapshots, not one overall score; the review counts are small and differ by platform. The overview did not specify when these snapshots were recorded.
| Platform | Aggregate score | Reviews counted |
|---|---|---|
| PC | 74/100 | 19 |
| PlayStation 4 | 78/100 | 10 |
| Xbox One | 80/100 | 4 |
| Nintendo Switch | 80/100 | 4 |
See the overview reporting the platform aggregates. With only four reviews in the Xbox One and Switch figures, those numbers are especially limited snapshots; they should not be read as proof that one platform version is better than another.

The technical caveat to know
GameSpot listed heavy frame-rate drops during some busy scenes as a drawback. This is a caveat reported by that review, not a finding established for every platform or every player’s experience. The available reviews support a measured warning, not a platform-wide technical diagnosis.

A physical season-pass disc is documented for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, but it is an edition of the complete season—not a standalone Broken Toys disc. The disc contains the first three episodes and provides access to download the remaining episode.
