The Wii U still works for games and features that do not need an internet connection, but Nintendo’s online play ended on April 8, 2024, and eShop purchases closed on March 27, 2023. You can still redownload games you already own and their updates for the “foreseeable future”—not as a permanent guarantee. What to do now depends on whether your console works and whether the games you want to play are usable offline.
Can you still play a Wii U?
Yes. Nintendo says Wii U features and game modes that do not require online communication remain usable. Discs and offline-compatible portions of games can still be played on a working console.
Nintendo ended online play and other functions using online communication at 5 p.m. PDT on April 8, 2024. That includes online co-operative play, internet rankings and data distribution. A game may still launch while particular online modes or features within it no longer work.
Nintendo warns that unofficial services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may pose unexpected security risks. They are not an official restoration of Nintendo’s service or a risk-free substitute.

Can you still download Wii U games you own?
Nintendo ended eShop purchases and free downloads, including demos, on March 27, 2023. You cannot use the Wii U eShop to buy games, obtain demos or free-to-start software, redeem download codes, or add funds.
Nintendo says owners can still redownload previously purchased content and download software updates “for the foreseeable future.” That wording describes current availability, not a promise that downloads will remain available indefinitely. If a game or update matters to you, take account of that uncertainty rather than assuming a digital library is a permanent backup.

What does “dead in its current form” mean?
The phrase describes the end of important online and storefront functions, not the end of every way to use the console. The eShop stopped accepting purchases in 2023, and Nintendo Network-dependent Wii U features ended in 2024; offline-compatible play remains.
In a 2026 GamesRadar+ report, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé recalled that Nintendo launched the NES Classic and SNES Classic to sustain its business and have products to sell at holiday volume, saying the company knew “the Wii U was on life support.” That was a retrospective comment about Nintendo’s commercial position during the Wii U era—not a new announcement that offline hardware use has ended.

Can Nintendo still repair a Wii U?
That depends on your region. Nintendo Japan ended official repair intake for Wii U consoles and peripherals, including the Wii U GamePad, on July 3, 2024, because necessary parts were out of stock. That notice establishes the status in Japan; it does not establish that official repair has ended everywhere.
If your console is broken, check Nintendo support for your country or region and ask what service, if any, is currently offered. Independent repair may be another possibility, but availability, provider reliability and parts supply vary; do not assume a particular repair or replacement part is available or compatible without confirming it.

Should you keep, repair or replace your Wii U?
For a working system, the decision is mostly about the games and modes you want. For a broken one, compare the value of getting that library playable with the repair or replacement options you can actually verify locally.
