The Xbox Handheld Launched Into a Tough Market—Was the Timing Really That Bad?

The ROG Xbox Ally launched in October 2025. Its timing argument comes down to competition, price, and whether Windows flexibility fits your game library.

The ROG Xbox Ally arrived on October 16, 2025, so the claim that it was “launching at the worst possible moment” is now a launch-era argument, not a current forecast. The timing case is real: Xbox and ASUS entered a field already framed around the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2, while asking buyers to weigh a Windows handheld’s flexibility against its price and setup demands. But “worst possible” is a judgment, not a fact—and the Ally’s software proposition gives it a different pitch from a conventional console handheld.

What “Xbox handheld” means—and when it launched

The “Xbox handheld” is the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally family, developed by ASUS and AMD with Xbox—not a separate console manufactured by Microsoft. Xbox announced that the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X became available on October 16, 2025, across 45 countries, with additional markets planned. That figure describes launch-day availability, not the current list of countries where either model can be bought. Xbox’s launch announcement has the dated account.

The original headline, published by Kyle Barr at Gizmodo on June 9, 2025, made a market-timing argument before the devices were available. Its core question remains useful: could a Windows-based gaming handheld make a compelling case when shoppers were already considering established handheld options and a new Nintendo system? The launch itself has resolved only the calendar question—not whether the timing was good for buyers or for Xbox.

What the two launch configurations cost and include

At its pre-order announcement, Xbox gave US estimated retail prices (ERPs) of $599.99 for the standard ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the Ally X. These are official reference prices, not a guarantee of today’s retailer price, stock, or availability in another region. Xbox’s product page also lists an Ally X20 variant at $1,299.99; treat that as a current listing that may vary by market or change over time. Check the live product page and local retailer before comparing prices.

The standard Ally and Ally X have the same listed display class, but differ in processor, memory, storage, and battery capacity. Those specifications do not establish how long either lasts in a particular game, how fast it performs, or whether its price is worthwhile for a particular buyer. Those questions require comparable testing and current local prices. See Xbox’s ROG Xbox Ally product page for its current listed configurations.

Why the timing argument looked persuasive

It entered a crowded comparison

Gizmodo’s June 2025 article framed the Steam Deck as the leading handheld PC and set the Ally against both the Steam Deck and Nintendo’s Switch 2. That is the article’s characterization, not a newly measured ranking. For a buyer, the practical point is that the Ally had to earn consideration beside devices associated with different strengths: PC-game access and a dedicated console ecosystem are not the same proposition. The supplied facts do not establish current competitor prices or a like-for-like performance ranking.

Its price raised the bar

The $599.99 US ERP for the standard Ally and $999.99 for the Ally X put price near the center of the debate. A buyer comparing handhelds should compare the model actually available locally, then consider what is included in its hardware and game access. A higher price alone does not prove poor value, just as a larger battery capacity or more memory does not establish a better experience without performance and runtime evidence.

Market forecasts were not sales results

Gizmodo’s 2025 article cited a February 2025 IDC estimate that total handheld-PC shipments for 2025 might reach 1.9 million, and described a Nintendo forecast of 15 million Switch 2 units for its financial year ending March 2026. These were contemporaneous projections reported in that article, not actual results, and they should not be read as current market share or realized sales. The forecast figures can illustrate the market expectations behind the 2025 argument, but they cannot settle whether the Ally launched at the “worst” moment.

What Xbox says makes the Ally different

Xbox’s pitch is Windows flexibility presented through an Xbox-oriented handheld experience. Its launch materials describe an aggregated library spanning Xbox, Game Pass where available, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts. Xbox also says games can be played locally or streamed from console or cloud. These are company descriptions of the product proposition, not independent findings about interface smoothness, setup friction, or the quality of streaming on a particular connection. Xbox’s launch announcement describes the access options.

In August 2025, Xbox said its Play Anywhere program supported over 1,000 games. That is Xbox’s stated catalog figure as of its announcement, not a count of every PC game playable on the Ally and not a guarantee that every title behaves identically on a handheld. Xbox also described a Handheld Compatibility Program with compatibility and performance labels. Those labels can help shoppers assess supported games, but they do not replace checking a specific title’s status and requirements. Xbox’s August announcement provides the dated program details.

How to judge whether the timing mattered to you

The launch-timing debate is most useful when translated into a buying decision. Compare the Ally with the alternatives you would actually use, rather than treating “handheld” as one interchangeable category.

  • Price: Compare current local prices for the specific Ally configuration and competing device. The announced US ERPs are historical reference points, not a promise of present-day pricing.
  • Games: List the titles and storefronts you care about. The Ally’s Windows storefront access may matter more than an Xbox-branded interface if your library spans PC platforms; verify compatibility for the games you expect to play.
  • Performance: Look for testing of the same games, settings, and power conditions before drawing conclusions from processor names alone. The specifications listed here do not establish game frame rates.
  • Battery: Compare measured runtime in the games and settings you expect to use. A 60Wh or 80Wh capacity is a hardware specification, not an hours-of-play estimate.
  • Portability and comfort: Compare weight, dimensions, controls, and ergonomics in person or through reliable reviews. The information cited here does not establish which device feels better to hold.
  • Setup tolerance: Decide whether you want Windows and multiple PC storefronts, or prefer a more focused console-style environment. Xbox’s product messaging does not by itself establish how much configuration a particular buyer will need.
  • Availability: Confirm the model, accessories, and warranty offered in your region. Launch availability across 45 countries is a historical launch-day fact, not a current inventory report.

So, was it the worst possible moment?

The timing was difficult in the sense intended by the original headline: the Ally entered a market already defined by prominent handheld alternatives, and its pricing made a strong case for its Windows flexibility and hardware configuration especially important. The counterargument is that access to multiple PC storefronts, Xbox services, local play, and streaming gives the Ally a distinct reason to exist for players whose libraries and habits fit that approach.

Neither side proves a universal verdict. The launch-era claim that this was the “worst possible moment” is best read as a sharp opinion about competition and price, not a measurable fact. For a buyer, the more useful question is whether the specific Ally model’s current local price, compatible games, and Windows-based experience fit better than the alternatives.
