There is no single best armor set in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. For combat, choose attack-up gear or a high-defense piece; for exploration, switch to equipment suited to climbing, swimming, or the weather. Upgrade the pieces you rely on, and wear all three parts of a set when its bonus matters more than a mixed loadout.

Best armor by situation

These are useful starting points, not a universal ranking. The effect you need for the next fight or obstacle matters more than a set’s overall reputation.

Need Armor to consider Why it fits
More attack power Fierce Deity Mask GamesRadar+ identifies it as an attack-focused option.
More protection Champion’s Leathers GamesRadar+ calls it out for high defense.
Climb faster Climbing Gear Its effect is climbing speed.
Swim up waterfalls Zora Armor It enables Link to swim up waterfalls.
Resist heat Desert Voe Headband It provides heat resistance.
Resist cold Snowquill Armor Its pieces provide cold resistance.
Protect against flames Flamebreaker Armor It provides flame protection.

The examples and effects in this shortlist are described by GamesRadar+’s armor guide. For hazards, match your gear to the environment rather than relying on a general-purpose outfit.

When to wear a full set—and when to mix pieces

Armor’s benefits can come from an individual piece or from wearing the complete set. The head, body, and leg pieces must all be equipped to receive a set bonus. For example, Snowquill pieces provide cold resistance, while the full set grants Unfreezable, according to IGN’s armor reference, updated June 11, 2025.

Mixing pieces lets you combine useful individual effects, but it can give up the bonus for a complete set. Before changing your outfit, consider whether the full-set effect is more useful for the task than the benefit of a particular piece from another set.

Why upgrading armor is worth considering

Great Fairies upgrade eligible armor using rupees and materials. Nintendo’s official armor-enhancement guide says, “Getting a Great Fairy to upgrade your armor will make you less susceptible to damage.” Upgrades improve defense, and upgrading every piece in a set twice can activate its bonus when the full set is worn, according to Nintendo Life’s upgrade guide.

Upgrade prices and required materials vary by piece and tier. Nintendo Life reports that a first upgrade can cost as little as 10 rupees and a final upgrade can cost 500 rupees; those figures are not fixed costs for every item. Reaching the maximum of four upgrades per piece requires unlocking all four Great Fairies.

How to unlock armor upgrades

  1. Begin the Potential Princess Sightings quest at the Lucky Clover Gazette.
  2. Complete “Serenade to a Great Fairy” at Woodland Stable to unlock an armor upgrade.
  3. Unlock the remaining Great Fairies to reach the maximum of four upgrades per piece. Nintendo Life’s Great Fairy guide describes the quest chain.

Where to find armor

Armor is spread across the world rather than limited to a single shop or quest. IGN’s armor reference covers pieces found in shops, caves, and chests, including Misko treasure; many pieces are in the Depths. Legacy sets can also be found through exploration: Nintendo Life’s amiibo rewards guide documents in-game locations, including the Time set in Depths mines and chests. Amiibo are not required to obtain these legacy sets.

How to choose what to upgrade first

  • Start with the job you do often. Prioritize an attack option if you want more damage, a defensive piece if protection is the concern, or specialized gear for a recurring traversal or weather challenge.
  • Consider the full outfit. If a set bonus is useful, upgrading every piece twice may be worthwhile; if you mostly need one piece’s effect, a mixed loadout may suit you better.
  • Weigh the resource cost. Upgrades use rupees and materials, and requirements differ across pieces and tiers. Save materials for the gear you expect to wear rather than assuming every upgrade costs the same.

Is any set objectively the best?

No single set is established as the mathematical winner for every player or situation. IGN’s reference lists 29 armor sets, while the effects range from combat benefits to environmental protection and traversal utility. Choose based on the obstacle ahead, then upgrade the pieces that support that choice.
