Why the 4-3-1-2 needs deliberate width and cover
The 4-3-1-2 puts two strikers ahead of a central attacking midfielder, with three central midfielders behind them. That concentrates your attacking options in the middle. The shape can support quick combinations through the center, but it does not provide natural wide attackers, so your fullbacks may need to create width.

Those forward runs have a cost: when possession changes, the space behind an advancing fullback can be a route for an opponent’s counterattack. A practical starting safeguard is to keep one fullback conservative and use a defensively minded central midfielder to help protect the middle. These are tactical recommendations based on the formation’s shape, not results from a controlled test.
Balanced 4-3-1-2 tactics to start with
- Defence: Start with balanced defensive behavior and moderate depth. There is no evidence that a very high line is required for this formation.
- Build-up: Use balanced build-up. Add a direct passing option if you want teammates to make forward movements; if that makes your attacks too rushed, return to a more measured approach.
- Fullbacks: Keep one fullback conservative at first. If your attack feels crowded, let the other fullback advance to provide an outside option.
- Midfield: Give one central midfielder a defensive job and set Cover Center. Let the other midfielders and the CAM join attacks to the extent their stamina and passing quality allow.
- Strikers: Try Get In Behind for a forward with good acceleration when you want runs beyond the defence. The instruction can also lead to more offside calls, so switch it off if those runs are mistimed or you prefer to build to feet.
These choices are a sensible starting configuration, not a guaranteed winning recipe. Adjust them to your players and the risks you are willing to take.

Choose a safer or more aggressive version

If opponents are exploiting the flanks, make the advancing fullback more conservative or improve your midfield cover. If your attacks are too narrow, try using one fullback to supply width before changing both.
How to assign instructions and switch game plans
In Ultimate Team, FIFAUTeam’s FC 24 guide gives this route to player instructions: Club → Squad → Squad Actions → Custom Tactics → Instructions. The labels and menus may differ outside Ultimate Team.

- Open Club → Squad → Squad Actions → Custom Tactics → Instructions.
- Select a player and apply the relevant instruction, such as Stay Back for a fullback or Cover Center for a midfielder.
- Save your changes in a game plan. FIFAUTeam says you can create up to four game plans through Custom Tactics.
- Switch between saved plans during a match with the directional button, as described in the guide.
Stay Back keeps a fullback in a more defensive position. Cover Center focuses a midfielder on central areas, which can leave the flanks more exposed; use it with awareness of the fullback duties around that player.

There is no source-backed universal best 4-3-1-2 setup in the available material. EA describes Tactical Presets as starting points for creating tactics and says: “All Tactical Presets are compatible with all formations available, but Custom Presets might come with incompatibilities.” A general instruction guide also advises adapting player instructions to your play style and squad needs.

The exact-formation community example is anecdotal. EA’s professional tactics example covers the different 4-3-2-1 formation, so it cannot establish that formation’s settings as the best choices for a 4-3-1-2. No controlled comparisons, platform-specific results, or competitive telemetry establish a winning depth or instruction combination here.
