id Software’s enhanced release combines the original DOOM (1993) and DOOM II (1994) with their major add-ons, new content, online and local multiplayer, and in-game community mods. Eligible digital owners on supported platforms can claim it as a free update; original-version saves do not transfer.

What the enhanced release includes

Bethesda announced the combined release on August 8, 2024. Alongside both games, it includes Master Levels for DOOM II, TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, No Rest for the Living, SIGIL, and Legacy of Rust, plus a new Deathmatch map pack. Nintendo’s listing describes 187 mission maps across the package; that total is a platform listing figure, not a count of Deathmatch maps. (Bethesda release notes; Nintendo listing)

Legacy of Rust

Legacy of Rust is a new official episode created with contributions from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames. Bethesda calls it the first official episode since DOOM II; it introduces new demons and weapons and contains 16 maps, divided evenly between two episodes: The Vulcan Abyss and Counterfeit Eden. (Bethesda release notes; Bethesda product page)

Deathmatch maps

The release adds 25 community-made Deathmatch maps to the 18 already included, bringing the total to 43. These are multiplayer maps, separate from the campaign and episode mission maps. (Bethesda release notes)

Features and platform support

Online and split-screen multiplayer

Online co-op and Deathmatch support up to 16 players, with cross-platform play. Split-screen supports up to four players across platforms, rising to eight on Xbox Series X|S and PC. (Bethesda release notes)

Community mods

Players can browse, download, and play community mods from within the game. Bethesda says PC players can publish single-player mods, while players on all platforms can download and play community mods. Nintendo’s Switch listing narrows that platform’s support to featured, curated mods, so do not assume the Switch has the same mod selection or publishing options as PC. (Bethesda product page; Nintendo listing)

Music, archive material, and accessibility

  • Switch between the original MIDI music and Andrew Hulshult’s remastered IDKFA soundtrack, with a complete track list spanning both games.
  • Explore the id Vault, which includes development art, footage, discarded items, and playable development levels.
  • New accessibility features include a modern font, high contrast, text-to-speech, and speech-to-text multiplayer chat, as described by Nintendo.
  • Eight additional translations are listed: Mexican Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

Resolution and frame rate by platform

Bethesda’s figures are platform specifications, not independent performance measurements. The release notes list these targets:

How existing owners can get the enhanced release

Eligible digital owners of either original game on Xbox One, PS4, Switch, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or GOG receive the combined release through a free update. Bethesda notes that the new release may need to be located in the platform’s store and downloaded rather than appearing automatically in the library. Eligibility and store availability are platform-specific, so check the relevant store if it is not visible. (Bethesda FAQ; Bethesda support)

  1. Open the store or library for the account that owns the eligible digital copy.
  2. Look for the combined DOOM and DOOM II release. If it is not offered as an update, search for the new release in that store and download it.
  3. For original versions, use the platform-specific library or installation options instead of assuming the enhanced release replaces them.

Original versions, save files, and campaign selection

The original releases remain accessible through platform-specific routes. Steam users can select the original version through the game’s Beta Participation property option; GOG users can install originals from their collection; qualifying Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass owners retain access from their libraries. Exact access depends on the storefront and account entitlement. (Bethesda FAQ)

Saves from the original versions are not compatible with the enhanced release. The enhanced version does allow campaigns to be played in any order and includes Level Select, so a player can choose a campaign or level without relying on an original save. (Bethesda FAQ and release notes)

Which version or platform makes sense?

  • You already own an eligible digital copy: check that platform’s store for the free combined release before buying it again.
  • You want the highest listed console frame rate: Bethesda specifies native 4K/120 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; older consoles and Switch have lower platform-specific targets.
  • You want to publish mods: Bethesda identifies PC as the platform for publishing single-player mods. Switch mod access is limited to featured, curated content.
  • You plan to play with a group: online cross-platform play supports up to 16, while split-screen limits vary by platform.
  • You need original save progress: keep using the original version, since its saves do not carry into the enhanced release.

Bethesda’s official product page lists Xbox, PC, Steam, PlayStation, Epic Games Store, GOG, Nintendo Switch, and Game Pass availability. Storefront availability and subscription inclusion can change, so confirm current access with the relevant platform. (Bethesda product page)
