Nintendo and Illumination used a January 25, 2026 Nintendo Direct presentation to reveal the first look at Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Their announcement confirms the date and reveal, but does not establish that this was the first Nintendo Direct of 2026.
What the January 25 presentation revealed
The movie-focused presentation introduced Yoshi as part of the animated follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Nintendo and Illumination described the film as based on the world of Super Mario Bros. and announced that it was co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri, co-financed by Nintendo and Universal Pictures, and distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures. The release credits Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic as directors, Matthew Fogel as screenwriter, and Brian Tyler as composer. It lists Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Brie Larson as Rosalina. These are credits included in the announcement, not all roles newly revealed during the January presentation. Nintendo’s film announcement
How it differs from the other movie Directs
Nintendo’s movie promotion included separate Direct presentations with different purposes. The January event was the Yoshi first-look presentation; a November 12, 2025 Direct premiered the official trailer and announced Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Later, a March 9, 2026 Direct featured the film’s final trailer and, according to Nintendo, included no game information. What changed about the release date
The date depends on territory. The November 2025 announcement had set April 3, 2026 for the United States and many other markets, with Japan scheduled for April 24 and selected territories across April. On January 25, Nintendo and Illumination moved the U.S. and many-market date to April 1, 2026; Japan remained April 24, while selected territories were still scheduled to release during April. Nintendo’s U.S. movie page also lists April 1. Original date announcement · Updated date announcement · Nintendo movie page

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa connected the film to the company’s game business in a February 2026 investor Q&A. He called it the second motion picture Nintendo had actively helped produce and said the company was watching the audience reaction. He also said Nintendo hoped the movie’s arrival would encourage more people to pick up Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Switch collection released in 2025. That makes the games a relevant companion for players interested in the film’s Galaxy setting, but they were not an announcement from the January Direct. February 2026 investor Q&A
