There was no reliable market-wide ranking of the most anticipated board games released in 2025. This retrospective watchlist instead focuses on named games publishers highlighted for Gen Con or SPIEL Essen, then separates those announcements from the games that received later award recognition. Event visibility is a useful way to find titles worth watching, but it is not proof of broad consumer demand.
What made these 2025 board games worth watching?
For a reader asking which new board games were worth watching in 2025, the clearest evidence is what publishers put forward at major conventions. Asmodee announced games planned for Gen Con, July 31–August 3 in Indianapolis, and later shared a lineup for SPIEL Essen. Ravensburger also announced games it would bring to Gen Con. These are dated publisher and event announcements—not a ranking of sales, online interest, or critical quality.
The distinction matters in a retrospective: a game being showcased, previewed, or sold in limited quantities at a convention does not necessarily mean it had a general retail release at that time.
Gen Con 2025: publisher-highlighted releases
The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship
Designed by Matt Leacock and published by Z-Man Studio, this narrative game explores an alternate story in which the Fellowship has failed. Asmodee listed it among the games planned to officially launch at Gen Con. That premise makes it a notable pick for fans interested in a new take on Middle-earth rather than a direct retelling of the familiar journey.

Star Wars: Battle of Hoth
Designed by Adrien Martinot and Richard Borg and published by Days of Wonder, this tactical game draws on the Memoir ’44 system and pits Rebel forces against the Empire. Asmodee also listed it as a planned Gen Con launch. The setting and system give readers two concrete reasons to keep an eye on it: a major Star Wars battle and a rules foundation associated with tactical conflict.
Brick Like This!
The second Asmodee and LEGO Group partnership title is a team party game. Players use LEGO bricks to recreate patterns from clues given by teammates. Asmodee said it would officially launch at Gen Con. Its cooperative clue-and-building premise sets it apart from the larger licensed strategy and narrative games on this list.
Ravensburger’s convention lineup
Gen Con’s July 21 announcement said Ravensburger would bring several new games to the convention. The named titles included Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons, additions to Disney Villainous and Star Wars Villainous, Gloomies, Sweet Victory, and Disney Villainous: Unstoppable! The announcement describes Unstoppable! as family-friendly. It establishes convention presence, not a ranking or a general retail date for each game.

SPIEL Essen 2025: more games on the watchlist
7 Wonders Dice
Designed by Antoine Bauza and published by Repos Production, 7 Wonders Dice was among the titles Asmodee named in its October SPIEL lineup. The announcement establishes its place in the publisher’s event slate; it does not provide a player count, play time, or other specifications.

Take Time
This cooperative game from Libellud was designed by Alexi Piovesan and Julien Prothière. Asmodee called it “one of the most anticipated co-op game” in its lineup announcement. That wording is the publisher’s characterization, not the result of a measured public poll.
The Hobbit: There and Back Again
Designed by Reiner Knizia and published by Office Dog, this title was also included in Asmodee’s SPIEL lineup. Its Hobbit connection and established designer made it a recognizable release to watch, though the announcement alone does not establish how it compares with other 2025 releases in player interest.
Rank #3
- Play it Safe or Risk it All? - In Flip7, you will press your luck by getting dealt cards without revealing the same number twice.
- How to Win - Be the first to reach 200 points in this intense press-your-luck game that tests your risk-taking and strategy abilities.
- Beware of Busting - Rack up points based on the total number value of the cards in front of you but watch out for duplicate numbers that can bust you out of the round.
- Unique Playing Deck - The deck is stacked with multiples of each number, from twelve 12’s, eleven 11’s and so on, along with special action and modifier cards for added excitement.
- Exciting Action Cards: Flip 7 includes Flip Three, Freeze, Second Chance, and Score Modifier cards, adding twists and turns to every round.
The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth – Allies
Asmodee’s lineup included Allies, an expansion for the 2024 two-player game The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth. It is important to distinguish this from a standalone new game: readers considering it need the base game, and its appearance on a 2025 lineup does not change the base game’s 2024 release date.
Forest Shuffle: Dartmoor
Designed by Kosch, Forest Shuffle: Dartmoor was described as a standalone version. That makes it distinct from an expansion that requires an earlier game, although the event announcement does not state its detailed specifications or local edition information.
Dewan: an Essen appearance, but a 2026 release
Asmodee said Dewan, from Space Cowboys and designers Johannes Goupy and Yoann Levet, was planned for January 2026. It would be playable and purchasable in limited quantities at SPIEL Essen. That limited event availability should not be mistaken for a standard 2025 retail release.
Rank #4

What the 2025 awards recognized
SPIEL Essen’s October 27 recap reported the results of the 2025 German Game Award. These results offer a separate retrospective lens: they recognize titles through an award outcome, not through evidence that those games were the most anticipated before release.
| Award result | Game | Design and publishers |
|---|---|---|
| First place | SETI: Search for Extraterrestrial Life | Tomáš Holek; CGE and HeidelBÄR Games |
| Second place | Endeavor: Deep Sea | Carl de Visser and Jarratt Gray; Frosted Games and Board Game Circus |
| Third place | Bomb Busters | Hisashi Hayashi; Pegasus Spiele |
| Best Children’s Game | Die kleinen Alchemisten | Matúš Kotry; CGE and HeidelBÄR Games |
How big was the 2025 SPIEL Essen release field?
The official fair recap gives a sense of the scale behind any shortlist. SPIEL Essen ran October 23–26, 2025. Merz Verlag reported 220,000 visitors, 948 exhibitors from 50 nations, and more than 1,700 new releases. Those figures describe the fair and its releases; they do not identify the most popular games or establish how many people anticipated any one title.
How to use this list when looking for a game
The announcements provide reasons to watch these titles and clarify some release plans, but they do not give a consistent set of buying details. Before choosing a game, check the current publisher page or local retailer listing for the edition available in your region, whether it is a standalone game or an expansion, and its player count, play time, age guidance, and stock status. A convention demo, limited event sale, preorder, and general retail availability are different things; the announcements here do not establish current prices or inventory.
