Epic opened The Walking Dead Universe (TWDU) content to Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) creators in 2025. UEFN offered two brand templates, while Fortnite Creative offered a Flat Grid starting point; both routes included access to themed building assets and Walker enemies. Publishing began May 16, 2025, under additional creator terms that included a 12% share of TWDU island engagement payouts with Skybound Entertainment. These are launch details, not confirmation that every feature or promotion remains available today.

What arrived for Fortnite creators

Epic’s March 25, 2025 announcement introduced tools and assets for building islands based on The Walking Dead Universe. The package included Walker NPCs, themed weapons, prefabs, galleries and Heavy Linework, a comic-inspired post-processing effect. Epic described Walkers as slow horde enemies that can bite players and damage environmental props.

The available starting point depended on the creation tool: UEFN had two TWDU-specific templates, while Fortnite Creative creators could use Flat Grid and build with prison-themed assets.

Choose UEFN or Fortnite Creative

Route Starting options What it suits
UEFN Prison Starter Island and Walker NPC Template; creators could also start from scratch with the brand selected. Creators who want a TWDU project template or a template for learning Walker gameplay.
Fortnite Creative Flat Grid template, plus eight prison-themed prefabs and four prison-themed galleries. Creators who want to build in Fortnite Creative from a straightforward grid island.

Neither route is universally better; choose based on your workflow and the tools you want to use. Epic’s UEFN documentation describes the brand template workflow.

How to start a TWDU island in UEFN

  1. Open UEFN’s Project Browser.
  2. Open Brand Templates and choose The Walking Dead Universe from the All Brands dropdown.
  3. Select Prison Starter Island to explore the prison setting, Walker NPC Template to learn its Walker gameplay, or create a project from scratch with the brand selected.

In Fortnite Creative, start with the Flat Grid template, then use the themed prefabs and galleries to construct your island.

Publishing requirements and the Skybound share

Under the 2025 launch terms, publishing a TWDU island required membership in the Island Creator Program, acceptance of additional TWDU terms in Creator Portal, and compliance with TWDU Brand and Creator Rules. Epic’s v34.20 release notes said the terms required creators to share 12% of their TWDU island engagement payout with Skybound Entertainment. This figure describes the announced 2025 terms; check Creator Portal for the terms that apply when publishing now. Epic also said creators who had already opted into LEGO or TMNT publishing terms did not need to sign the addendum again.

When publishing opened—and the lighting issue

Epic initially planned to enable publishing at 9 AM ET on May 16, 2025. An update on May 15 moved the time to 12 PM ET because of a lighting issue; Epic’s v35.10 release notes confirmed the 12 PM ET opening. Epic said published islands would temporarily revert to Chapter 4 Time of Day Manager. Islands made in Fortnite Creative remained on Chapter 5 Time of Day Manager and could have darker interiors during that period. These were rollout conditions reported in 2025.

What Epic announced for discovery and players

Epic announced plans for a dedicated TWDU Game Collection, a Skybound-curated “TWDU Picks” row, possible eligibility for other Discover placements such as Epic’s Picks, and a player quest. Those were promotional plans tied to the launch, not guarantees of current placement or availability.

  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. • Redemption: Online

Epic also said Negan would become usable as an NPC in v34.30 and arrive as a playable Fortnite Shop character on April 4, 2025. The Shop character was digital Fortnite content, not a physical product.
