To start The Winter Gambit Encounter in Where Winds Meet, complete the Jianghu Legacy Veiled Blades, advance the story until Big Zhao invites you to Zhao Pu’s residence, and set the in-game time to Zi hour. Then inspect the note upstairs, speak with Big Zhao, and complete his ingredient errands.
How to trigger The Winter Gambit
- Complete the reported prerequisites. Finish the Jianghu Legacy Veiled Blades and progress the main story until Big Zhao invites you to Zhao Pu’s residence. These conditions are reported by walkthroughs, but no official quest page confirms them. GameTrek’s walkthrough and a May 2026 community guide identify these as requirements.
- Set the time to Zi hour. GameTrek recommends teleporting to the Goldwater Street Boundary Stone in Kaifeng; the community guide directs players to Zhao Pu’s residence after changing the time. If the Encounter does not begin at the boundary stone, go to the residence and approach it with the quest marker visible.
Complete the encounter
Inspect the note and find Big Zhao
At Zhao Pu’s residence, inspect the note upstairs. Guides describe it as a scroll or letter. Follow the marker afterward and speak with Big Zhao.
Buy and deliver the ingredients
The remaining tasks involve visiting meat and fish stalls and returning the requested ingredients to Big Zhao. NerdsChalk’s walkthrough identifies Liang Jingrou at Fan Manor as the source for lamb and mentions a nearby fishmonger. GameTrek specifically says to buy Chinese Herring for 9,000 coins and deliver it to Big Zhao. Because the guides differ in how they describe the shopping sequence and meat step, follow the active quest markers for the exact errands.
Rewards and what is confirmed
Walkthroughs agree that the encounter awards Echo Jade ×50 and 10,000 coins. Other reward details conflict, so check the reward panel in your current game rather than relying on a specific exploration or experience-point total.

If the encounter does not appear
- Make sure Veiled Blades is complete.
- Check whether the main story has advanced far enough for Big Zhao to invite you to Zhao Pu’s residence.
- Set the time to Zi hour.
- Try approaching Zhao Pu’s residence directly if using the Goldwater Street Boundary Stone did not trigger the Encounter.
