The Rise of Mobile Gaming: What’s Next?

Mobile gaming’s next phase is less about guaranteed growth than keeping players engaged and expanding how games reach phones through stores, cloud gaming and remote play.

Mobile gaming is not running out of players, but its next phase is less about explosive growth than about keeping players engaged and changing how games reach phones. Sensor Tower estimates that mobile game in-app purchase revenue rose 1% to $82 billion in 2025, while downloads slowed. At the same time, cloud gaming and remote play offer additional ways to play, subject to platform rules, service access and network conditions.

Mobile gaming is huge, but its growth is maturing

Sensor Tower’s 2026 State of Gaming report estimates that mobile game in-app purchase (IAP) revenue reached $82 billion in 2025, up 1% from 2024. That figure covers IAP revenue, not every kind of spending on mobile games, and it is an industry estimate rather than a count of all mobile-game income.

For context, Sensor Tower’s 2025 report estimated $82 billion in mobile game IAP revenue in 2024, up 4% year over year. The difference between those reported growth rates points to a slower pace in this measure; it does not mean the market has disappeared or that every game is losing revenue. Sensor Tower also estimated that people spent 3.5 trillion hours on mobile games in 2024, up 8% year over year. Revenue, downloads and time spent describe different things, so none should be used as a substitute for another.

The wider games audience remains substantial, too, but its size needs careful interpretation. Newzoo forecasts 3.70 billion game players worldwide in 2026, up 4.4% year over year. This is a forecast for players across gaming, not a mobile-only audience count.

Retention is becoming more important than chasing installs

Sensor Tower interprets the combination of modest IAP growth and slower download growth in 2025 as a sign of a more mature market. Its analysis points to publishers putting greater emphasis on engaging and retaining existing players through live operations, events and collaborations built around established intellectual property. That is a reading of the market data, not a claim that every studio follows the same playbook.

For players, this can mean games that change over time through limited-time activities, new content or themed collaborations. For publishers, the commercial challenge is to give an existing audience reasons to return and spend, rather than relying only on a growing stream of new downloads. Sensor Tower has also noted that games compete for people’s time and spending with social platforms, short-form video and AI apps; this is its analysis of the attention landscape, not proof that any one category caused the market’s growth pattern.

App-store rules shape how games get to phones

Mobile distribution is not just a question of which game a publisher makes. The rules of app stores and operating systems can affect how a game is submitted, discovered and played. Those rules vary by platform and jurisdiction, so a decision in one country should not be treated as a worldwide change.

In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) examined mobile browsers and cloud gaming. Its earlier market-study material described app-store policies that could constrain cloud-gaming catalogue apps, including a requirement for individual games to be submitted separately for review and distribution. The CMA’s 2025 final decision confirmed competition concerns in mobile browser markets. That final outcome should be distinguished from the investigation’s earlier findings and discussion of cloud gaming; it is not a blanket ruling that app-store rules have changed everywhere.

Cloud gaming expands the options, with trade-offs

Cloud gaming runs a game on remote computing hardware and streams the result to a device. That can let a phone access games that demand more local processing power than the handset can provide, but the phone still needs a way to reach the service and a connection capable of delivering a responsive stream.

Way to play Where the game runs What to check
Native mobile game Installed and run on the phone Phone compatibility, available storage, and whether the game uses touch controls or supports a controller
Cloud gaming Remote service hardware; video and input are streamed over the internet Service and catalogue availability, subscription terms, device and operating-system access, connection quality, and latency
Remote play A separate console or computer runs the game and streams it to the phone Access to the host device, the remote-play option it supports, and a network connection that can carry the stream responsively

Cloud gaming is therefore an additional route to play, not a guarantee that every game will run well on every phone. Catalogue limits, service terms, device support, internet quality and latency all affect the experience. Remote play is a different route: it relies on a game-running device the player can access, rather than a cloud service’s remote hardware.

Controllers help with some games, not all of them

Touch controls remain a normal way to play mobile games; a physical controller is optional. It may suit games designed around gamepad input or certain streamed games, but support depends on the specific title as well as the phone and controller.

Backbone lists Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna among services compatible with its Backbone One controller. That is the manufacturer’s compatibility information, not an independent comparison of those services or a guarantee of access in every region. Before buying a controller, check the phone model and connector, whether a case fits, and whether the particular game supports an external controller. Backbone’s compatibility guidance also varies by device and model.

What to watch next

  • Whether engagement can sustain revenue: In a market with slower download growth, live events, ongoing content and collaborations may matter more to publishers seeking to retain players.
  • How distribution rules evolve: App-store policies influence the paths games can take to players, but regulatory outcomes are jurisdiction-specific. The UK CMA’s findings are not a global rule.
  • How useful streaming becomes in practice: Cloud gaming and remote play broaden the ways phones can access games, while network responsiveness, service availability and device support remain real constraints.
  • Which measure is being discussed: IAP revenue, downloads, hours played and total gamers are not interchangeable. Check the measure, geography, year and whether a figure is an estimate or forecast before drawing a conclusion.
