The Switch 2 pairs handheld and TV play and supports compatible original Switch games, but battery life, storage requirements, and current price deserve a closer look.

I can’t honestly call the Nintendo Switch 2 my best purchase of the year without knowing the buyer’s reasons or experience. What I can establish is why it may be a compelling purchase: it combines handheld and TV play, supports compatible original Switch games, and adds new hardware capabilities—with real trade-offs in battery life, storage, and price.

What the Switch 2 offers

Nintendo announced the Switch 2 for release in the United States on June 5, 2025. The hardware is designed for both handheld play and play on a television: its built-in display is 1080p, while TV output can reach 4K when the game and a compatible television support it. Nintendo says 4K output is capped at 60 frames per second. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every game runs at 4K. Nintendo Switch 2 features

What to know before buying

Battery life depends on the game

Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life, depending on the games played, and approximately three hours to charge while the console is in sleep mode. These are Nintendo’s estimates, not independent test results; a buyer who expects long stretches away from a power source should factor in the wide range. Nintendo Switch 2 tech specs

Original Switch games are not guaranteed to work perfectly

The Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital games from the original Switch, but Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for games in your library rather than assuming the whole collection will work unchanged. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility

Game storage requires microSD Express

For expanded game storage, Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB, according to Nintendo’s specifications. A conventional microSD card cannot serve as general game storage on Switch 2; Nintendo says it can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch. Launch prices are not current prices

Nintendo’s US launch announcement listed a $449.99 suggested retail price for the console. Its April 18, 2025 update listed launch suggested retail prices of $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle, $79.99 for Mario Kart World, and $69.99 for Donkey Kong Bananza. These are historical US launch prices, not current price quotes; check retailers for today’s price and availability. Is it the right purchase for you?

The strongest case for Switch 2 is practical: one system can be used handheld or connected to a TV, and compatible original Switch games may carry over. Whether that makes it worth buying depends on the games you want, how often you’ll use each play mode, whether your existing library is compatible, and whether the battery estimate suits the way you play. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described it as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch.” Nintendo’s announcement
