The article also compares estimated Steam revenue, PlayStation players and Xbox paid-game sales—but those are separate platform views, not one all-platform ranking.
What GameDiscoverCo ranked—and what it measured
Simon Carless published GameDiscoverCo’s year-end analysis on December 17, 2024. Its rankings are estimates of new-game performance, not audited platform sales disclosures. The article describes estimation algorithms but does not publish a replicable method or complete chart data as accessible text.
- Steam: separate estimates for paid-game copies sold and gross revenue. The revenue view includes estimated in-game purchases and downloadable content (DLC).
- PlayStation: estimated players for paid games. Carless says the revenue chart did not differ much and that most leading titles were premium priced.
- Xbox: paid games, with Game Pass downloads discussed separately rather than included in the paid ranking.
- Nintendo Switch: the article points to an eShop chart published the previous month; it was not updated for this year-end analysis.
Because the platforms and measures differ, these lists should not be combined into a single cross-platform leaderboard.
Steam: copies sold and revenue tell different stories
Top named games by estimated copies sold
GameDiscoverCo’s Steam paid-game copies-sold view names Black Myth: Wukong at #1, Palworld at #2 and Helldivers 2 at #3. Other placements explicitly identified in the article are:
#1 Best Overall

- #4: Chained Together
- #5: Path of Exile 2
- #6: Liar’s Bar
- #7: Supermarket Simulator
- #10: Buckshot Roulette
- #16: TCG Card Shop Simulator
These are the ranks the article names in its text, not a complete transcription of every position in the chart. GameDiscoverCo says every game shown in that Steam chart exceeded one million estimated units; four exceeded five million, and 14 exceeded two million.
Path of Exile 2 was #5 after 11 days of availability, according to the December 2024 article. Carless also reported a contemporaneous Steam peak of 437,000 concurrent users. Neither figure should be read as a current count.
Rank #2
Why the gross-revenue list differs
Copies sold measure units; the revenue chart estimates gross revenue, including in-game purchases and DLC. That changes the order: EA Sports FC 25 was #14 by estimated Steam copies sold but #7 by estimated gross revenue. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Gray Zone Warfare and Farming Simulator 25 entered the revenue top list after placing just outside the copies-sold top 20. A higher revenue position therefore does not mean a higher unit-sales position.
PlayStation: estimated players and a strong showing for sports
GameDiscoverCo’s PlayStation view ranks paid games by estimated players. Sports titles account for five of the top ten positions. The article says about 11 games in its chart reached two million lifetime players and five exceeded five million; these are estimates, not platform-reported sales totals.

Named placements include Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero at #7 and four PlayStation-published titles in the top 20:
- #6: Helldivers 2
- #10: The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- #15: Astro Bot
- #17: MLB The Show 24
The #10 placement for The Last of Us Part II Remastered has an important pricing caveat: owners of the original game could upgrade for $10. GameDiscoverCo also estimated that more than 3.5 million Chinese PlayStation players played Black Myth: Wukong, which it described as more than half of that game’s PlayStation sales.

Xbox: paid games are separate from Game Pass downloads
The Xbox paid-game ranking excludes Game Pass. The article says the US college-football title ranked #1, but its prose does not name the game. It reports four new paid games above one million estimated units and 11 above 500,000; the #20 entry was below 200,000 units.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 ranked #5 and Star Wars Outlaws #7. For those two games, GameDiscoverCo says the Xbox-to-PlayStation ratios were closer to 1:1 than for other major titles.

Game Pass appears in a separate list of leading new games by downloads: Palworld, MLB The Show 24, Little Kitty, Big City, Hellblade II and Indiana Jones. These are subscription downloads, not paid-game sales, so they should not be compared directly with the Xbox paid ranking.
How much confidence should you put in the rankings?
These lists are useful as directional estimates, but their limitations matter. Carless cautioned, “No doubt there’s a glitch or two in here.” The article also identifies estimation complications: Call of Duty is difficult to assess because of the CoD HQ app structure, while demos and trials can complicate classification; Skull & Bones is mentioned in that context.
Quick Recap
- Compare the same platform and the same metric: units, estimated players, downloads or gross revenue.
- Keep paid purchases separate from subscription access, particularly on Xbox.
- Do not treat an estimated rank as a platform-confirmed sales disclosure or infer a complete cross-platform order from separate charts.
- Do not assume the Switch comparison reflects year-end performance: GameDiscoverCo did not update that chart for this article.
