It is most appealing if you want to learn a mechanically rich fighter or play with friends; it is a weaker fit if you are buying mainly for a complete solo campaign or a large roster.
How the fighting works
Combat is built around four buttons: light, medium and heavy attacks, plus a magic button for character-specific abilities. The Steam listing also describes enhanced supers and juggle decay, a system intended to keep combos from continuing indefinitely. That gives the game a relatively approachable button layout without making every character play alike.
The official feature list includes tutorials, combo trials, a training room and match replays. Those tools make the game easier to study than a fighter that leaves newcomers to figure out its systems alone. Steam reproduces reviewer excerpts that speak positively about the teaching and combat: IGN rated it 8/10 and called it “an exceptional fighting game by any measure,” while noting the six-character roster; fighting-game commentator Stephen “Sajam” Lyon praised how it teaches general concepts. What you can play
Story mode: one released chapter
Chapter 1, starring Arizona, is available. The Steam and official website descriptions have advertised further story chapters as planned, but that wording is outdated: Mane6 and Modus announced on November 22, 2023, that no new content would be produced after the Season 1 Pass, including additional story chapters. The announcement said some material made for Chapter 2 might be released separately and specifically named the “Restricted Section” stage for version 6.0; it did not say the story itself would continue. Versus and online play
Official listings describe local versus, online matchmaking, rollback netcode and a pixel-art social area called the Pixel Lobby. The developer announced crossplay between Steam and consoles. It also said story data, lobby accessories, casual XP, friend lists and DLC are tracked separately, so crossplay does not mean progress or purchases transfer between platform copies. The available sources establish that these features exist, not how responsive matches feel in a particular connection or how many people are playing now. Roster, DLC and value
The base game has six characters, a modest roster by the standards of the genre. Steam and Nintendo list a Season 1 Pass and individual character content; Steam’s DLC catalog includes packs for Texas, Stronghoof, Nidra and Baihe. If having more characters matters to you, compare the base-game listing with the current pass or individual DLC prices on your chosen store before buying. The central value trade-off is straightforward: the combat and teaching tools may carry the game for a player who enjoys practicing and playing versus, while a buyer expecting a long campaign or a broad launch roster will find the released package limited. The story’s canceled continuation matters particularly if you are considering the game for solo narrative play.
Platforms and multiplayer setup
Steam lists Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. Console versions are available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S. The Switch listing specifies one to two players locally and online and lists Nintendo Switch Pro Controller compatibility. The developer said digital and physical console editions were sold at launch, but that announcement does not confirm present-day physical stock or availability. For PC, Steam currently lists 6 GB of storage and broadband internet among the requirements. Steam also notes that its client requires Windows 10 or later as of January 1, 2024; check the live store page for the full, current requirements for your operating system. Steam store listing
Who should play it?
- Good fit: players looking for a four-button fighter with training and combo tools, or friends who want local versus and cross-platform online play.
- Consider carefully: newcomers who want a story-driven introduction may appreciate the tutorials, but should know that only Arizona’s first chapter is available.
- Probably not the right pick: players whose main priorities are a large base roster or a complete, multi-chapter campaign.
Verdict
Them’s Fightin’ Herds has a clear strength: it makes its fighting systems approachable to study while still offering character-specific mechanics, online rollback and crossplay. Its small roster and unfinished story scope are substantial qualifications, not minor footnotes. If the draw is learning the combat or challenging friends, it is worth considering; if you want extensive solo content, the released game does not deliver the originally advertised chapter expansion.
