Why Pokémon Champions Felt Like a Beta to Some Players at Launch

Pokémon Champions’ launch drew complaints about performance, missing features and bugs. The “fleshed out beta” line was one creator’s reaction, not an official label or a consensus finding.

Pokémon Champions was designed as an accessible, battle-focused game, but its April 8, 2026 launch drew complaints about performance, missing features, and bugs. Nintendo Life reported that some players saw the gap between the game’s competitive ambitions and its launch-day state as unfinished; creator AfroSenju put it bluntly: “This game honestly just feels like a fleshed out beta.” That was an individual reaction, not an official label or a measure of all players’ views.

What players criticized at launch

Nintendo Life’s April 8, 2026 report captured a mixed early response. Its complaints described the launch snapshot, not a verified list of issues that remain today.

  • Performance: Players reported patchy 30fps performance on both Switch and Switch 2.
  • Battle options: The report noted that 6v6 battles and rental teams were absent at launch.
  • Roster and items: The launch roster was around 180 Pokémon, and some familiar competitive items were missing. That launch figure should not be read as the current roster size.
  • Bugs: Players reported problems involving Pokémon transfers and battle mechanics.

AfroSenju’s “fleshed out beta” remark, quoted in the report, captures the frustration but cannot establish how widespread it was. The complaints themselves were about whether the game’s available modes, roster, polish, and reliability matched expectations for a competitive battler.

What Pokémon Champions is meant to do

The Pokémon Company presents Champions as a battle-focused entry point: players can recruit Pokémon in-game, train them, check matchup and move information during battles, and play ranked, casual, or private matches. Eligible Pokémon can also be brought in through Pokémon HOME. The official site lists mobile availability as well as Switch, with cross-platform battles between mobile and Switch players. Tools intended to lower the barrier to battling

The Pokémon Company says Scout can provide recommended Pokémon that are already fully leveled. The company also highlights real-time matchup and move information, and says battles are designed around a five-minute target. These are stated design goals and features; they do not by themselves answer whether launch performance or feature omissions met players’ expectations. Why the launch gap prompted the beta comparison

Champions aims to simplify competitive battling while serving players looking for a focused battle platform. That makes usability and breadth especially visible: players can judge the experience by how smoothly battles run, which formats and items are available, how much of the Pokémon roster they can use, and how easily they can assemble a team. The launch complaints reported by Nintendo Life landed on several of those points at once.

  • Meet over 386 Pokémon and go on adventures with your handpicked rescue team to save the world from natural disasters
  • Explore Mystery dungeons that change terrain, enemies and rewards every time you enter?

The design also suggests an evolving game rather than a one-time release. That can give a live service room to add features and content, but it does not make launch-day omissions or technical complaints disappear. The useful distinction is between what players reported on April 8 and what the game’s developers say they intend the platform to provide.

Free-to-start does not mean every purchase is required

The game is free-to-start, and the official site notes that optional purchases are available. Nintendo’s Canadian launch announcement listed a Starter Pack for $9.99 in Canada at launch; that is a dated, region-specific listing, not a universal current price. The available information does not establish that purchases fix the reported shortcomings or provide a competitive advantage. Nintendo Canada launch announcement

What is known about support after launch

The official Champions site records continued activity after release, including August 2026 events, a September Regulation Set M-C notice, 2026 World Championships results, and an announcement about Pokémon Champions Junior in Germany and Brazil. This establishes ongoing updates and events, but not whether particular performance problems, missing formats, roster limits, item omissions, or bugs from launch were fixed. The launch complaints should therefore be treated as historical reports unless a specific later update confirms a change. Official Pokémon Champions site

The Pokémon Company also said archive-stream views for the Pokémon Champions category at the 2026 Pokémon Japan Championships were approximately 1.5 times the previous year’s figure. That comparison concerns archived stream views; it is not a player count or a survey of satisfaction. The Pokémon Company: “Authentic Pokémon battles made easy for everyone”

How to read the “beta” criticism

“Beta” was a way for some launch-day players to describe a product they felt lacked polish or expected competitive features. It was not Pokémon’s official classification of the game, and the evidence does not show that all players agreed. The criticism is best understood as a reaction to the difference between Champions’ stated promise of approachable, streamlined battles and the particular performance and content complaints reported at release—not as a definitive assessment of the game’s condition in October 2026.
