In a run reported on December 17, 2025, CZR Drums beat Super Mario 64 with one star while playing on real hardware with drum controls. The Escapist reported a time of 10:27 and called it the first “1 Star Drum%” run; that world-first claim and time are attributed to the publication, not independently confirmed here.
What happened in the one-star drum run?
The Escapist’s Aaron Alford reported that CZR Drums completed the run on December 17, 2025. The category was described as “1 Star Drum%,” and the reported finish time was 10:27. The article, last updated December 22, 2025, called the performance a world-first. The linked run video could not be directly inspected, and no separate leaderboard record was established, so the category, time and first-run claim should be understood as The Escapist’s account.

The report says CZR played on real hardware using drum controls. It does not identify the drum kit, its brand or model, or how the controls were mapped. The achievement demonstrates that the game could be completed through the setup used for this run; it does not establish a particular kit or configuration that other players can reproduce.
How can Mario 64 be beaten with only one star?
In the reported route, the key obstacle was the door to the only star needed for the run. The Escapist says CZR used a technique called the Crackslide, credited to Crackhex and FramePerfection: sliding backward on a rail at a particular position and angle builds enough speed to get past the door. The publication contrasts this with a backwards long jump, which it describes as potentially faster but less reliable for that obstacle. The underlying gameplay footage was not directly inspected, so these mechanics are presented as the publication’s explanation.

The Escapist also reported that CZR landed the Crackslide on his first attempt of the run and hit a lobby backwards long jump on his first try. Those details are part of the same account, rather than independently verified measurements or gameplay analysis.
What did CZR Drums say?
As the game’s ending played, The Escapist quoted CZR: “We just beat Mario, on real hardware, in under 11 minutes with one star, with fricken drum controls!” The publication also quoted his reaction: “Do you know what that means? We made history here today…” and “One goal, one dream, one Mario, one star.”

Does the run prove that any drum kit can play Mario 64?
No. The report does not name the kit or explain its input chain, button mapping, latency, or compatibility. Without those details, the run is not a setup guide and does not support recommending a particular drum product. It is a reported example of a one-star completion using drum controls on real hardware.
