No published evidence shows that the Xbox Ally X’s Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) update makes games 30% smoother. The “up to 30%” figure comes from ASUS’s separate pre-release comparison of the ROG Xbox Ally X with the previous-generation ROG Ally X. Auto SR is a different feature, and Microsoft has not published an Ally X-specific benchmark showing that uplift.
Auto SR entered preview for Xbox Insiders on the ROG Xbox Ally X on April 30, 2026. It upscales a game rendered at a lower resolution, and Microsoft’s current requirements say the Ally X must be docked to use it.
What does the 30% figure actually measure?
ASUS reported an “up to 30% performance increase” for the ROG Xbox Ally X compared with the previous-generation ROG Ally X. This was a pre-release hardware comparison, not a test of Auto SR and not a published measurement of a 30% frame-rate or smoothness gain.
ASUS tested Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages at 1080p with default in-game settings, in Turbo mode both plugged in and on battery. The comparison was between the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA, AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme) and ROG Ally X (RC72LA, AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme); both systems were listed with an 80Wh battery. The result is ASUS’s pre-release claim under those conditions, not a general promise for every game or an Auto SR result. ASUS’s announcement gives the hardware comparison.

What Auto SR does—and when it became available
Windows Automatic Super Resolution renders a supported game at a lower resolution, then upscales the image to a higher output resolution. The goal is to improve performance while preserving more visible detail than simply lowering the output resolution. Microsoft identifies 1280 × 720 as the ideal input resolution for the Ally X, but the supported resolution, display mode, game, drivers and Auto SR package all affect whether it can run.
Xbox announced Auto SR as a test-and-refine preview for Xbox Insiders using the ROG Xbox Ally X on April 30, 2026. The feature’s preview status and requirements can change; consult the current Microsoft support page for the latest compatibility details. The announcement is on Xbox Wire.

How to enable Auto SR on the Ally X
Microsoft’s setup instructions use the Xbox Game Bar Display widget. The Ally X must meet the current docked-use requirement, and the game and settings must be compatible.
- Connect the ROG Xbox Ally X to an external display by docking it.
- Launch a supported game, then open the Xbox Game Bar and its Display widget.
- Open the Auto SR tab and enable Auto SR for that game.
- Select a supported in-game resolution and use fullscreen mode.
- Check the widget’s status indicator to confirm Auto SR is active. If it is off, the widget can show why it is not running.
These steps and compatibility requirements are documented by Microsoft. If the image or interface looks worse in a particular game, Microsoft says Auto SR can be switched off for that game.

Does Auto SR work in handheld mode?
Not according to Microsoft’s current requirements for the ROG Xbox Ally X: it must be docked and connected to an external display. That makes this a docked-play feature under the documented requirements, not a handheld-mode performance claim. Do not assume that ordinary handheld play can use Auto SR unless Microsoft updates its guidance.
Compatibility and image-quality limits
Auto SR is not universal. Microsoft lists DirectX 10 or later as supported, while DirectX 9, Vulkan, OpenGL, certain formats such as 10-bit, and some execution modes are excluded. HDR content is not currently supported. Fine text and user-interface elements can also vary in appearance depending on a game’s rendering and settings.

- Check the game and API: a supported title must use a compatible graphics API and mode.
- Check resolution and display mode: choose a supported in-game resolution and fullscreen mode; 1280 × 720 is Microsoft’s ideal input resolution for the Ally X.
- Check the status indicator: the Game Bar Display widget reports whether Auto SR is active or why it is not.
- Check image quality in the game: if text, UI or the overall image is unsatisfactory, disable Auto SR for that title.
Auto SR, frame generation and shader preloading are different
These features address different bottlenecks, so their performance claims should not be treated as interchangeable.

What to expect from the update
Auto SR may improve performance in a compatible game when used with the required docked setup, but the result depends on the title, resolution, display mode, drivers and image-quality trade-off. The Xbox announcement describes a preview, while Microsoft’s support documentation explains how the feature works and where it is limited; neither establishes a 30% Ally X uplift from Auto SR. Treat ASUS’s 30% figure as a distinct, pre-release comparison between two Ally generations.
