Reporters Without Borders (RSF) created the project with Minecraft design collective BlockWorks, DDB Germany, and production company Media.Monks. Its aim is to provide another route to reporting that may be blocked at home—not to guarantee access or safety everywhere.
How the library gives censored reporting another route to readers
Instead of visiting a conventional news site, players explore a purpose-built Minecraft world and read articles reproduced in books. The game is the setting and delivery route; the material is journalism written by reporters, including work censored in the writers’ countries of origin. RSF’s launch account said the articles were available in English and in their original language.
The approach uses Minecraft’s reach to draw attention to reporting that might otherwise be inaccessible. But it is not a promise that the game will bypass every block, surveillance system, or local restriction. RSF presents the library as an access route, and availability and personal risk can vary by country.
How to visit The Uncensored Library
RSF and Minecraft have documented two ways to explore it: join the online server or download the world for local use. The server address published for the project is visit.uncensoredlibrary.com. Check the official project page for the current server, download, and technical instructions before trying either route; game editions, platform support, and availability can change.

| Route | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Online server | Connect to the library’s Minecraft server to explore the world online. | Confirm the server address and current access requirements on the official project page. |
| Downloaded world | Download the map and explore it locally; RSF’s launch materials describe this route as suitable for offline exploration. | Check the live download and its compatibility instructions for your game edition and device. |
The official materials establish these two access routes, but do not provide a current, complete compatibility list for every platform and Minecraft edition. Do not assume a particular device or version will work without checking the project’s current instructions. The download is presented as a way to obtain the world; the cited project materials do not say that the map itself is paid.
Which countries are represented?
The collection has expanded over time, so country counts need a date. In its March 11, 2026 update, RSF listed journalism from Egypt, Belarus, Brazil, Eritrea, Iran, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and the United States. That update also described new material in Egypt, Belarus, Russia, and Iran, including reporting by Iranian journalist Elahe Mohammadi and exiled Russian outlets. Consult RSF’s March 2026 update for the current project description.

The initial library opened in March 2020 with five country sections: Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. RSF added rooms for Belarus and Brazil in March 2021. In 2023, Minecraft described around 300 books across twelve wings; RSF reported that the Iran room opened in March that year and that the project had reached nine countries. Those are dated milestones, not a current count.
Minecraft’s 2023 account said the selection of countries took into account active Minecraft communities and RSF’s Press Freedom Index, and that journalists from selected countries supplied articles. RSF regularly curates and updates the collection, so the contents can change.

How the project was built and what its reach figures mean
RSF’s 2020 launch account described a three-month build involving 24 builders from 16 countries and more than 250 hours of work. The team used over 12.5 million blocks; RSF said the main dome was nearly 300 metres wide. The scale turns the library into an explorable space, but the project’s purpose is the reporting held inside it.
Published audience numbers are snapshots using different measures, not a single running total. RSF reported more than 20 million players from 165 countries and over 300,000 map downloads in March 2021. In March 2026, it reported over one million visits and 10 million book reads since the 2020 opening. Players, visits, downloads, and book reads are distinct measures and should not be added together or treated as directly comparable.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) operates the project. Its launch materials credit BlockWorks with building the Minecraft environment and name DDB Germany and Media.Monks as collaborators. The in-game world makes the articles navigable; it does not replace the work of the journalists whose reporting appears there.
