The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is a wired, one-handed controller designed to work alongside other Xbox controllers. Its downloadable 3D-printable thumbstick toppers let players adapt the joystick’s contact surface and dimensions; they are files, not physical parts. Xbox’s May 2026 update says the topper program now offers seven shapes and an improved attachment design.
What the Xbox Adaptive Joystick is
“Nunchuk” describes the device’s one-handed form factor, but its official name is Xbox Adaptive Joystick. Xbox announced it in August 2024 as a wired companion to Xbox controllers for players with limited mobility. It is a single joystick, rather than a complete replacement controller.
The control layout includes a standard Xbox thumbstick, four front button inputs, and two additional buttons positioned to mimic the bumper and trigger on a traditional controller. Xbox says players can customize and remap the buttons, create controller profiles, and switch between profiles using the Xbox Accessories app.
Ways to connect and use it
Xbox documents several ways to incorporate the joystick into a setup. Which arrangement works depends on a player’s access needs and existing equipment; the available product information does not establish that one configuration will suit everyone.

- Designed for accessibility - unified face-button layout, featuring lower-resistance buttons and highly sensitive joysticks.
- 2.4G wireless connection for Xbox and Windows.
- Dual Super Buttons - offer large, programmable keys, allowing you to map any function instantly without using software.
- 3 profiles. 3.5mm audio jack. Microphone mute button. Hall Effect joysticks.
- With an Xbox Adaptive Controller: Connect the joystick to build a broader adaptive setup.
- Directly to a console or PC: Xbox says another controller can be used for menu navigation and Nexus button functionality.
- With Xbox Controller Assist: Link it with an Xbox controller through Controller Assist, previously called Xbox Copilot.
Xbox describes the joystick as usable one-handed, mounted on a tabletop, or operated with body parts other than the hands. It has an optional ¼-inch-20 threaded mounting connection; mounting equipment is sold separately. Check the connection and mounting requirements against your particular setup before choosing an arrangement.
What the printable thumbstick toppers change
The topper files let users adapt the thumbstick’s contact surface and dimensions, including its height and width. This can provide different shapes and sizes to interact with the stick; the files do not change the controller’s connection method or turn it into a different kind of controller.

Xbox’s May 21, 2026 update says it improved the attachment design to help toppers stay in place during play and withstand higher-force use. The update also added a Goal Post shape and described seven available shapes in total. It does not name all seven in the published update text, so consult the live Xbox Design Lab interface for the complete current lineup.
The files are free to download, and the 2026 update says they can be accessed without buying a controller. To use one, you still need to produce the physical part with a 3D printer or use a printing service; any service or printing costs depend on the provider. Xbox’s 2024 announcement described six designs and a download flow that involved selecting a compatible controller and shape. Because the program has since changed, use the current Design Lab interface rather than relying on that older shape count or flow.

How it differs from other Xbox accessibility options
The 8BitDo Lite SE and ByoWave Proteus are separate products covered in Xbox’s 2024 announcement. They differ in form and control approach; neither should be confused with the Adaptive Joystick’s single-stick layout.

Price and availability: what is established
In August 2024, Xbox said the Adaptive Joystick would launch in early 2025 in select Xbox markets worldwide and be sold exclusively through the Microsoft Store at a $29.99 USD estimated retail price. Those were launch-era terms; current price, stock, and market availability have not been established here.
Xbox’s Gaming Accessibility Team described the device as “a wired companion to Xbox controllers, specifically for players with limited mobility.” That is the team’s stated design intent, not a measured outcome for individual players. The announcement also cited more than 425 million players with disabilities worldwide as an Xbox-attributed figure; it is not a device-specific market estimate.
