To complete Through a Nightmare, Darkly in Oblivion Remastered, speak with Kud-Ei at the Bravil Mages Guild, enter Henantier’s dream using the Dreamworld Amulet, and collect the four Elements from the trials of Resolve, Perception, Patience, and Courage. The trials can be completed in any order; return to Henantier after collecting all four.
How to start Through a Nightmare, Darkly
- Find Kud-Ei at the Mages Guild in Bravil and ask her about Henantier. Accept her request to help.
- If she will not give you the amulet or the quest will not progress, complete the Bravil Recommendation quest and speak with her again. Some walkthroughs describe that recommendation as a prerequisite, while others do not; finishing it is the practical workaround if you are stuck.
- Follow Kud-Ei to Henantier’s house. Equip the Dreamworld Amulet and sleep in the nearby bed to enter the dream.
Inside the dreamworld, you cannot use your ordinary inventory or cast magic. Check the supplies provided there—including weapons, armor, spells and healing items—before entering a trial.
Complete the four dream trials
You need one Element from each trial. Their order is flexible. Completing Resolve first can provide armor for later hazards, but it means taking on the combat trial at the outset.
Test of Resolve
Fight two Dreamworld Minotaurs in the arena. Pick up the healing potions, weapons and armor near the entrance before engaging. Disarming the minotaurs or attacking with the staff from outside their melee range are optional tactics described by walkthroughs, not guaranteed ways to bypass the fight. Collect the Element of Resolve when you finish.

Test of Perception
Use the provided torch to spot pressure plates and traps along the route. Watch the floor and move carefully where hazards are in your path. Triggering a trap does not by itself fail the trial; continue through and retrieve the Element of Perception at the end.
Test of Patience
Read the Mysterious Scroll in the container at the start of the trial. Its repeated symbols show which plates make up the safe route across the successive grids. Match the symbols as you cross to reach the Element of Patience.

Test of Courage
Follow the long underwater passage. Take the water-breathing potion at the start and use it when your breath meter is running low; another potion may be available partway through. Argonian characters can breathe underwater, according to the quest reference. Retrieve the Element of Courage at the end.
Finish the quest and claim the reward
Once you have all four Elements, return to Henantier in the dreamworld. He will take you back to the real world; speak with him again to complete the quest and receive the reward. Published walkthroughs disagree about the reward: one account specifies six random scrolls and one Fame point, while another describes a tome. The exact item and count are therefore not consistent across those guides.

Remastered crash note
Bethesda’s official Update 1.2, dated July 16, 2025, lists the fix: “Fixed crash at end of ‘Through a Nightmare, Darkly’ quest”. This is a historical patch note, not evidence that the issue remains in current builds or that every platform has the same status.
