Nintendo’s latest listed system update, version 23.0.1, fixes a software delay introduced in version 23.0.0. Nintendo’s notes do not report widespread hardware failures or give an affected-console count, so the allegation is not a sound reason by itself to skip the current update.
What Nintendo says the update did
Nintendo’s Switch 2 update history lists version 23.0.1 as the latest version reviewed here. The Australian support page dates it October 1, 2026; the North American page displays September 30, 2026. That one-day difference is a regional support-page date display, not evidence of different fixes. Nintendo describes the change as: “Fixed an issue from system version 23.0.0 where software occasionally took a long time to start, pause, or close.” Nintendo’s Switch 2 system update history

The documented problem is an occasional delay when starting, pausing, or closing software. Nintendo says 23.0.1 fixed it. The notes do not say that the update bricked consoles, damaged hardware, or caused microSD Express cards to stop working.
Is “thousands” a verified number?
No. Nintendo’s published notes give no total of affected consoles, and individual online reports cannot establish either the scale of a problem or its cause. A symptom appearing after an update is not, on its own, proof that the firmware caused it. Treat “thousands” as an unverified claim, not a measured incident count.

Should you update your Switch 2?
Based on Nintendo’s published notes, there is no documented reason to avoid version 23.0.1 because of the “thousands” allegation. Nintendo lists it as the latest version and says it fixes the software delay associated with 23.0.0. If you are deciding whether to install it, use Nintendo’s current update guidance and consider the symptom you are actually experiencing; do not treat unrelated card or hardware reports as confirmation that the update caused damage.

Software update or download trouble
Nintendo’s UK troubleshooting guidance for a game update that does not apply, or repeated prompts to update, recommends checking that the console has the latest system update, restarting, checking for corrupted data, and deleting and redownloading the software. If the problem involves a microSD Express card, follow the card steps below and try downloading the software to system memory. If the issue continues with system memory, Nintendo says the console will need repair. Nintendo UK: software update troubleshooting

“Switch 2 microSD Express card not recognized” or download errors
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only; a different microSD card type is not compatible. Nintendo’s North American guidance for error 2016-0247 provides card troubleshooting steps. Test whether downloads work to system memory, which helps distinguish a card-related problem from one that persists without the card. If the problem persists with system memory, follow Nintendo’s repair guidance rather than assuming a replacement card will fix console damage. Nintendo Support: error 2016-0247
Console will not power on or another hardware symptom
A console that will not power on, Joy-Con connectivity trouble, and a card recognition error are different problems from software taking a long time to start, pause, or close. Nintendo’s 23.0.1 note does not diagnose those symptoms. Use the support flow for the specific issue and avoid concluding that the update caused it solely because the timing overlapped.
