Switch 2 Pro Controller Teardown: What the Glue and Fragile Parts Mean for Owners

iFixit’s teardown of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller shows why opening it can be difficult: hidden screws, adhesive, layered plastic, and parts that are wedged together complicate disassembly and access to the battery and thumbsticks. That is an independent teardown assessment, not evidence of a measured failure rate. Nintendo’s advice to owners is clear: do not disassemble or attempt to repair the controller or its battery.

What iFixit found inside the controller

In a teardown video published July 10, 2025, iFixit describes hidden screws and glue, along with layers of plastic and parts wedged together that make removal difficult. It says the thumbgrips were not designed to be replaced, battery access is difficult, and replacing the thumbsticks is a difficult process. The video also demonstrates removing the NFC antenna and audio jack.

iFixit uses phrases such as “repair nightmare” and “built to break” as editorial framing. The teardown does not provide a quantified repairability score, repair-success rate, or evidence that the controller has a particular failure rate. Its observations support a warning about the difficulty of opening and working on the device, not a claim that every controller will fail. Watch iFixit’s Switch 2 Pro Controller teardown.

The video description promotes iFixit repair tools, but it does not establish that a particular kit is compatible with this controller. No model-specific replacement stick, battery, or repair kit is verified here.

What Nintendo recommends before seeking service

Nintendo’s safety leaflet says: “Do not disassemble or try to repair this product or the battery inside it.” It also directs users to stop using a damaged product and contact Nintendo Customer Support. This is Nintendo’s owner guidance; it is separate from iFixit’s independent assessment of how difficult disassembly is. Read Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller information leaflet.

If a control stick feels sticky or hard to move

  1. Temporarily disconnect the controller.
  2. Gently brush around the affected stick with a clean, dry toothbrush.
  3. Wipe away debris with a soft, dry cloth.
  4. Reconnect the controller and calibrate the control sticks.

Nintendo recommends service if these steps do not resolve the issue. See Nintendo’s control-stick troubleshooting steps.

If the controller will not power on or charge

Follow Nintendo’s power troubleshooting flow, which checks the approved Switch 2 AC adapter and cable, charging indicators, pairing, and charging through an alternative connection or cable. In one indicated situation, Nintendo advises allowing 15 to 30 minutes of charging before pairing. If the problem persists, use Nintendo’s service route rather than opening the controller. The Japan support page lists about three hours for a full charge; that is a charging specification, not a repair estimate. See Nintendo’s power-issues troubleshooting and Nintendo Support Japan’s Pro Controller page.

If buttons do not respond correctly

Nintendo’s button troubleshooting covers pairing, firmware, and button checks. If the input test fails or the issue substantially affects play, Nintendo says service may be needed. Use Nintendo’s button troubleshooting flow.

Official service or independent disassembly?

For most owners, the practical choice is to try Nintendo’s non-invasive troubleshooting and then contact Nintendo if the problem remains. Independent disassembly is a different path: iFixit’s teardown indicates that access involves adhesive, hidden fasteners, and difficult-to-remove parts, while Nintendo advises owners not to attempt repairs themselves. The sources cited here do not establish a compatible replacement part or model-specific repair kit, nor do they provide enough verified price information to compare service with repair or replacement.

If you independently choose to proceed despite Nintendo’s guidance, a general precision electronics repair kit is only a broad search category—not a confirmed fit for this controller or a Nintendo recommendation. Do not treat a tool advertisement in the teardown description as proof of compatibility.

Warranty and safety details

Nintendo of America says separately purchased accessories have a one-year manufacturer’s warranty and asks eligible US owners with dated proof of purchase to contact Nintendo about service. Its page says physically damaged accessories are not covered under warranty. These terms are US-specific; check Nintendo’s current warranty and service terms for your region. Check Nintendo of America’s accessory replacement options.

Nintendo of Europe’s safety leaflet advises against using the controller within 15 centimetres of a cardiac pacemaker while wireless communication is in use, and advises people with implanted devices to consult a doctor. Follow the leaflet’s guidance if this applies to you.
