Where the spangram starts

The Yahoo guide reports that AUTUMN begins at the first A in the fifth row and snakes up and over to the N on the other side of that row. The original grid was not independently verified, so treat this path description as a secondary-source account.

How Strands hints work

According to the Yahoo guide, Strands uses a six-by-eight letter grid. Connect adjacent letters horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to find theme words and the spangram; every letter in the grid is used. Finding three non-answer words of at least four letters earns a hint that highlights the letters in an answer. Further help can reveal the answer’s letter sequence one at a time. These mechanics are described by the guide and were not separately confirmed against NYT documentation.

The guide lists these possible non-theme words for making progress: PUMP, HAVE, FOIL, FOOL, LOOT, TOLL, SOUR, REST, and BALL.
