The theme points to ideas or creations that are first of their kind and pave the way for what follows.
- Light hint: Not the old stuff.
- First two letters of the six entries: SE, NO, FR, IN, OR, and BR. BR begins the spangram.
- The spangram combines vertical and horizontal letter paths.
Parade’s January 3, 2026 guide reports that the game awards a hint after every three non-theme words; that hint reveals letters in a theme word. The game’s instructions, as reproduced by Parade, say: “Find theme words to fill the board.”

How the Strands board works
Parade’s guide describes theme words as filling the board without overlapping. Players drag across letters or tap them to form a word; when tapping, double-tap the final letter to submit. The spangram describes the theme and touches two opposite sides of the board.
