DOC is a word-processing file extension, MID refers to a MIDI file, TIFF is an image format, and ZIP identifies a compressed archive format. Forbes explains the file-extension group.

Why Nov. 4 can mean two different puzzles
The number matters because the date alone is ambiguous. Game #877 is dated Nov. 4, 2025, while the Nov. 4, 2024 puzzle was #512 and had different answers. Parade identifies the 2024 game as #512; the #877 answer set is also reported by TechRadar and Forbes.

LEAF, SHEET, and FILM can all suggest thin materials, while DOC may evoke a document or paper. In this puzzle, DOC belongs with file extensions; the other three join COAT in the “thin layer” group. Separating the familiar paper association from the more specific file-format pattern is the key distinction.
