Netflix’s BioShock film is still moving forward, but it has no confirmed release date or locked production schedule. Director Francis Lawrence said in May 2025 that he had received a new draft and felt the project was “in a pretty good place”; producer Roy Lee’s more recent update, in February 2026, said the team hoped to begin production in 2027, while warning that plans can change.
What was the director’s good news?
In a May 15, 2025 report by GameSpot, Lawrence said he had received a new draft and described the adaptation as difficult: “It’s a tricky adaptation, so there’s lots of things to figure out and to get right.” He added, “I think we’re in a pretty good place, honestly.”

That is an encouraging progress update, not confirmation that the screenplay is finished, filming has begun, or a release date has been set. Lawrence also noted that adapting the game requires working through what to preserve and how to make it work as a film.
What is the latest status of the Netflix BioShock movie?
Producer Roy Lee told ComingSoon on February 20, 2026 that the team hoped to start production in 2027, after Lawrence completed post-production on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Lee called the project “steadily on the path,” but said circumstances could get in the way. A 2027 start is therefore an intention, not a confirmed production date; no release window was announced in that update.

The film was announced by Netflix on August 25, 2022, with Lawrence attached to direct and Michael Green named as screenwriter. Netflix identified 2K and Take-Two Interactive as partners and Roy Lee among the producers in its announcement.
Which BioShock game will the film adapt?
Lee said in a September 2025 interview that the movie would be based on the first BioShock game. That is the confirmed source-game description; specific characters, scenes, or plot points for the film have not been established in the cited update. The wider franchise also includes BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite, but that does not mean the movie adapts those entries. Lee’s comments on the source game and delays were reported by PC Gamer on September 10, 2025.

Why has the adaptation taken so long?
Lawrence has described the game-to-film translation as a challenge, and the May 2025 report discussed a new draft and writer Justin Rhodes. Lee later pointed to continuing script work and Lawrence’s other commitments as factors behind the delay. Netflix’s original announcement named Michael Green as screenwriter; the later reporting does not establish the final writing credits or identify the current draft’s author, so those details should not be treated as settled.

Netflix describes BioShock as a science-fiction and horror franchise built around dystopian settings. In its 2022 announcement, Netflix said the games had sold “more than 39 million copies worldwide,” counting original releases, re-releases, remastered editions, and bundled collections. That is Netflix’s attributed 2022 figure, not a current independently audited sales total.
