To finish Kanya’s fishing missions in Monster Hunter Wilds, catch each requested fish with the Fishing Rod and use the lure that matches your target. The five quests begin at the Scarlet Forest Base Camp; the most useful reported spots include Scarlet Forest Area 16 for Goldenfish and Area 17 for whoppers and Grand Escunite. Fish locations are habitats, not guaranteed spawns, so check the Aquatic Life Field Guide if a target is missing.
How Kanya’s fishing missions work
Kanya gives the fishing quests at the Scarlet Forest Base Camp. The sequence below follows the progression and locations reported by Icy Veins’ fishing guide and Mobalytics’ fishing guide. Treat the areas as places to search, not guaranteed spawn points.

Catch the target with your rod
For the Gravid Bowfin mission, Mobalytics specifies a rod catch. A Capture Net can help clear nearby fish so the target is easier to reach, but it does not replace catching the Bowfin with the rod for this task.
Which lure to use
These lure matches are listed by Icy Veins. The exact in-game item name is Tuff Joint Bait; Mobalytics spells the whopper lure “Tough Joint Bait,” so use the item label shown in your game.

Where to find the target fish
The broad habitat list below comes from Icy Veins. Quest-focused routes from Mobalytics are noted where they offer a more specific destination.
Goldenfish
Icy Veins lists Windward Plains Area 14 and Scarlet Forest Areas 2, 8, 12, and 16 as habitats. For Kanya’s quest, start with the calm pond in Scarlet Forest Area 16’s Ruin Interior. Mobalytics reports night as a useful time to try, but it is not an established guaranteed schedule.
Gravid Bowfin
Reported habitats include Windward Plains Area 13; Scarlet Forest Areas 1, 3, 4, and 12; Oilwell Basin Area 14; Iceshard Cliffs Area 1; and Ruins of Wyveria Areas 8 and 13. For the mission, Mobalytics points to Iceshard Cliffs Area 20 or Ruins of Wyveria Area 13. Use the Emerald Jitterbait and catch the fish with your rod.
Whoppers
Scarlet Forest Area 17 is a useful reported location for the whopper mission. Equip Tuff Joint Bait, the in-game spelling of the lure also called “Tough Joint Bait” by Mobalytics.

Grand Escunite and Goliath Squid
Icy Veins lists Goliath Squid in Scarlet Forest Area 17, and its lure table pairs both Goliath Squid and Grand Escunite with Tentacle Jig. For Kanya’s Grand Escunite quest, Mobalytics recommends Scarlet Forest Area 17 and reports it commonly at night.
How to fish and catch a whopper
- Equip the Fishing Rod from the item bar.
- Cast toward visible fish and move the lure to attract a bite.
- When a bite registers, reel in. To pursue a specific fish, choose its matching lure from the table above.
- For a whopper, follow the fish’s direction during the minigame. When prompted, pull it away from obstacles; respond to jumps with the reel action.
- When the fish tires and pauses, reel quickly to bring it in.
Input names and buttons differ by platform, so follow the prompts shown in your game rather than relying on one platform’s button labels.

They may be useful clues, but the available guides do not establish a complete official schedule for every species. Mobalytics reports night as a useful time for Goldenfish and Grand Escunite and notes that Gravid Bowfin results may vary. Icy Veins says spawn conditions can vary and describes resting at a tent or with a portable BBQ grill to change conditions; the rest function it describes requires High Rank and costs 300 Guild Points. Use the Aquatic Life Field Guide in-game to check known habitats, then search the listed area if the fish is not present.
What fishing is useful for
Fishing can provide scales and other crafting materials, and fish can be used as cooking ingredients. Icy Veins describes fish scales as having different uses, including healing, bomb-related firepower, and sharpness restoration. Check the in-game item description for the effect of a particular fish or scale rather than assuming every item has the same benefit.
