How Strands hints work

Strands is a word-search-style game played on a six-by-eight letter grid. Connect adjacent letters vertically, horizontally, or diagonally to form words that fit the daily theme. The spangram describes that theme and touches at least two sides of the board, though it does not have to start or finish at an edge.

Finding three valid words that are not theme answers unlocks an in-game hint highlighting the letters of a theme word. The game is available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app. For the rules and mechanics described here, see the Forbes guide.
