4 Best Patch 8 Multiclass Builds in Baldur’s Gate 3—and How to Choose

Four fully specified Patch 8 multiclass builds cover melee wizard, ranged fighter, Charisma melee, and throwing Barbarian play styles—with the key costs of each split explained.

Patch 8 added 12 subclasses to Baldur’s Gate 3, but the available build guidance supports four fully specified multiclass picks—not a defensible ranking of ten. These options pair one of Patch 8’s subclasses with another class: a melee Bladesinger, an Arcane Archer, a Swashbuckler–Hexblade, and a throwing Giant Barbarian. The right choice depends on the combat loop you want and which class-level milestones you are willing to give up.

What Patch 8 changed—and what “best” means here

Larian released Patch 8 on April 15, 2025, calling it the final patch to introduce new content apart from minor bug fixes. It added one subclass for each of the game’s 12 classes. They are Patch 8 additions, not newly released content. Larian’s announcement lists the roster and when each subclass becomes available.

The current build guide provides specific multiclass splits for four builds that use a Patch 8 subclass. It does not establish ten complete progressions or compare builds using a common damage or completion benchmark. Treat the four below as curated options, not an objective top-four ranking; “best” depends on your preferred role and tolerance for trade-offs. The build details and evaluations below reflect PC Gamer’s editorial guide, last updated September 3, 2026. Read the guide.

Four fully specified Patch 8 multiclass picks

Bladesinging Wizard 10 / Oath of the Ancients Paladin 2

Best fit: a spellcaster who wants to fight in melee and add Divine Smite to a wizard’s toolkit. The two Paladin levels provide access to Divine Smite and spell slots, while the build’s progression includes Wizard 6 for Extra Attack. The guide assumes Phalar Aluve and a split between Dexterity and Intelligence, so this is not simply a wizard that can ignore weapon and ability-score choices.

#1 Best Overall
Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

Consider the Paladin dip a particular direction, not a mandatory upgrade: the guide also names a pure Bladesinger and a two-level Fighter dip as viable alternatives. Choose based on the features you want from those levels rather than assuming one version wins in every fight.

Arcane Archer Fighter 11 / War Priest (War Cleric) 1

Best fit: a ranged character who wants to retain Fighter’s level-11 Improved Extra Attack. The one-level War Cleric dip grants a limited bonus-action main-hand attack: the guide describes its use as once per short rest. The core trade-off is preserving the Fighter milestone while adding that extra attack option.

The guide frames Arcane Archer versus Battle Master as a preference and feature trade-off, not a proven universal victory for either subclass. Larian describes Arcane Archers as ranged fighters who use special arrows; that gives the subclass its identity, but does not establish comparative damage. Larian’s Patch 8 overview describes the new subclasses.

Swashbuckler Rogue 7 / Hexblade Warlock 5

Best fit: a Charisma-oriented melee character combining Rogue mobility and Sneak Attacks with Warlock combat features. PC Gamer highlights the Swashbuckler’s easier Sneak Attack setup and bonus-action attack, while Hexblade 5 supplies Extra Attack. Larian’s description ties the Hexblade to a weapon-bound pact and the ability to return slain targets as Accursed Spectres.

Bonus actions are already in demand in this build. Ordinary dual wielding can compete with those other uses, so the guide considers it a poor fit unless the offhand weapon serves as a stat stick rather than a regular attack.

Path of the Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2

Best fit: a throwing-focused Barbarian who wants to keep most of the build in its Patch 8 subclass and add Fighter’s Action Surge. The guide’s progression includes Tavern Brawler and highlights Elemental Cleaver, Mighty Impel, and the Boot of the Giants. Larian describes the Giant Barbarian as growing in size and strength and hurling objects, including an elemental-damage-imbued hammer.

The guide delays the Fighter multiclass to preserve Giant Barbarian features before taking the two-level dip. This is a deliberate progression choice: taking the dip earlier changes when the Barbarian’s class features arrive.

How multiclassing changes your progression

Baldur’s Gate 3 does not enforce the tabletop ability-score prerequisites for multiclassing, according to PC Gamer’s guide. You can select any class when leveling, but every level spent elsewhere is still a level not spent toward the first class’s features.

  • Class levels govern key features. The guide lists Extra Attack at class level 5 for Fighters, Barbarians, Rangers, Monks, Blade Pact Warlocks, and Paladins. Blade and Valour Bards and Bladesinging Wizards reach it at level 6. Fighters gain Improved Extra Attack at level 11.
  • Splits can cost feats or ability-score improvements. As the guide’s example shows, Fighter 8 gets two ability-score improvements or feats, while Fighter 5 / Rogue 3 gets one.
  • Caster levels affect spells and slots. The guide says full casters gain spell levels on odd class levels and that full-caster multiclasses share a spell-slot pool. Spell slots and access to higher-level spells are related but distinct considerations; a multiclass split can change when class-specific spells become available.
  • The final split does not tell the whole story. A build’s early game can feel different from its endgame, depending on when you take the multiclass levels and unlock important features.

These are general milestones, not a substitute for checking a particular character’s level-up choices in your game version. The guide says most of its builds assume little or no respec; if you want to follow one without rebuilding, pay attention to the order in which it takes levels.

Choose by role, trade-off, and leveling preference

Build Combat focus Central trade-off
Bladesinging Wizard 10 / Oath of the Ancients Paladin 2 Melee-capable wizard with Divine Smite Splits attention between Dexterity and Intelligence; Paladin is one option among several dips
Arcane Archer Fighter 11 / War Priest 1 Ranged attacks with Arcane Archer features Keeps Fighter 11 Improved Extra Attack, adding a limited bonus-action attack
Swashbuckler Rogue 7 / Hexblade Warlock 5 Charisma-oriented melee with Sneak Attack and Extra Attack Competing bonus-action uses make ordinary dual wielding awkward
Path of the Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2 Throwing-focused Barbarian Delays Fighter levels to preserve Giant Barbarian progression before taking Action Surge

Use the table to narrow the choice, then check the progression for the level at which the feature you care about arrives. If you prefer a simpler plan, prioritize a build whose role matches your character from the start; if you are comfortable planning level by level, a multiclass can trade a class milestone for a specific tool from another class.

Why this is not a ranked list of ten builds

The guide names other candidate concepts, including Circle of Stars Spirit Guardians Death Cleric, Sorcerer Paladin, Gunslinger Bard, Master Martial Artist, Sneaky Assassin Guy Classic, Paladin Batman, Olympic Shotputter Barbarian, and Swashbuckling Duelist Bardadin. Those headings alone do not establish complete class splits or level-by-level progressions. Listing them as finished builds would require inventing allocations that the cited material does not substantiate.

Nor is there a published win rate, shared damage benchmark, or developer endorsement here that could establish which Patch 8 multiclass build is strongest. The four complete options above are better treated as different answers to different play-style preferences.

Patch 8 subclass roster and unlock levels

Larian’s announcement gives these subclass unlock levels. “Level” here means the level in the listed class, not total character level.

Class Patch 8 subclass Class level to choose it
Barbarian Path of the Giant 3
Bard College of Glamour 3
Cleric Death Domain 1
Druid Circle of Stars 2
Fighter Arcane Archer 3
Monk Way of the Drunken Master 3
Paladin Oath of the Crown 1
Ranger Swarmkeeper 3
Rogue Swashbuckler 3
Sorcerer Shadow Magic 1
Warlock Hexblade 1
Wizard Bladesinging 2

The remaining subclass identities help explain the range of Patch 8 options: Larian describes College of Glamour as protecting allies and commanding enemies, Circle of Stars as taking a starry form with combat and healing benefits, Drunken Master as regaining Ki through alcohol while being immune to drunkenness, and Swarmkeeper as summoning creatures such as moths, jellyfish, or bees. Shadow Magic gains shadow teleportation and a Hound of Ill Omen. These are official descriptions of subclass mechanics, not evidence that any one subclass is stronger than another.
