For a performance-first starting point in Fortnite on PC, use Fullscreen, your monitor’s native resolution, V-Sync Off, Performance rendering mode, Near view distance, 100% 3D Resolution, and Low textures and meshes. Turn on Show FPS so you can see what changes do. These are Epic’s competitive recommendations—not a universal optimal preset—so adjust one setting at a time and balance frame-rate stability with the visual detail you need.

Best Fortnite settings for high FPS on PC

Epic Games Store’s competitive guide, published April 30, 2026, recommends this performance-first baseline. It applies to the PC settings menu; console and mobile menus may differ. Your results depend on your hardware, display, resolution, game mode, and current game version.

Setting Starting value Why or when to adjust
Window Mode Fullscreen Epic recommends Fullscreen to minimize input lag.
Resolution Your monitor’s default resolution Epic notes that many competitive players use 1920 × 1080, but it is not a requirement. A lower resolution may improve performance at the cost of image clarity.
V-Sync Off This avoids tying the frame rate to the monitor’s refresh rate. Epic suggests using a variable-refresh-rate display, such as FreeSync or G-Sync, to help reduce tearing.
Rendering Mode Performance It disables most rendering features to reduce memory use and CPU/GPU load; visual quality is lower.
Frame Rate Limit Unlimited as a starting point If you see tearing, try a cap that matches your monitor’s refresh rate. If manually changing the limit causes stuttering or drops, restore the original setting.
View Distance Near Epic says nearby objects stay in focus and players remain visible at this setting.
3D Resolution 100% Lower it gradually only if your PC cannot sustain the performance you want. This changes the resolution used to render 3D objects.
Textures Low A performance-first choice that sacrifices visual detail.
Meshes Low Reduces object detail and can free performance.
Show FPS On Use the counter to compare performance while adjusting settings.
NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency On + Boost, if available This recommendation is for players with a supported NVIDIA GPU; it is not a setting for all hardware.

Epic’s guide recommends considering a 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or faster monitor if you want a high-refresh display. A monitor can show more of the frames your PC renders, but it cannot make the computer produce frames it cannot render. You do not need a new monitor simply to use the settings above.

How to enable Performance Mode

Epic says Performance Mode may increase FPS by lowering visual quality and reducing memory use and CPU/GPU load. To switch it on:

  1. Open Fortnite and go to the Video tab in Settings.
  2. Under Rendering Mode, select Performance.
  3. Apply the change and restart Fortnite.

Epic Games Player Support describes the feature this way: “Fortnite built-in performance mode can assist players with low frame rates. Enabling performance mode may increase your frames per second (FPS).” The wording is appropriately conditional: the mode may help, but it is not a guaranteed FPS increase on every PC.

While using Performance Mode, you can also remove High Resolution Textures in the Epic Games Launcher options. Epic says doing so saves over 15 GB of disk space and may help performance. The storage figure is Epic’s published claim; it is not a measured FPS gain.

Epic’s 2021 announcement included two historical laptop examples from a standard Squads match at 720p: The Fortnite Team reported 24 FPS rising to 61 FPS on an Intel i5-8265U laptop with 8 GB RAM and Intel UHD Graphics 620, and 18 FPS rising to 45 FPS on an AMD A10-5745M APU laptop with 6 GB RAM and Radeon HD 8610G. These are limited 2021 examples, not predictions for current PCs or versions of Fortnite.

Set V-Sync and the FPS cap for your display

V-Sync synchronizes the game’s frame output with the monitor’s refresh rate to reduce tearing. If you want a frame cap different from your display’s refresh rate, Epic’s instructions are to turn V-Sync off, choose a value under Frame Rate Limit, and apply the change.

  1. In Fortnite’s Video settings, set V-Sync to Off.
  2. Choose your preferred value under Frame Rate Limit.
  3. Apply the settings and check the result in a match.

Epic says the highest in-game limit is 360 FPS. The lobby can show a 60 or 120 FPS limit depending on window and rendering mode, so test in a match before deciding a selected cap has failed. If a manual limit change brings stuttering or frame-rate drops, restore the original setting.

Why is Fortnite FPS low after changing settings?

Settings are only one part of performance. Epic recommends checking background load, graphics drivers, Windows configuration, GPU selection, and whether the PC meets the game’s listed requirements. These steps are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes; available controls vary by Windows version and device.

  • In Windows, use an appropriate high-performance power mode, turn on Game Mode, and turn off Xbox Game Bar, as Epic suggests.
  • Disable Windows Delivery Optimization downloads while troubleshooting.
  • If available on your system, enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.

Make sure Fortnite uses the intended GPU

On a PC with both integrated and dedicated graphics, confirm that Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance GPU. Epic also recommends checking this when troubleshooting graphics errors, along with updating the graphics driver and trying Low quality presets with 100% 3D Resolution.

Check heat, airflow, and system requirements

If graphics problems begin after extended play, Epic advises considering overheating. Keep vents unobstructed, maintain clean airflow, and use the PC in a well-ventilated space.

How to tune settings without losing sight of the goal

  1. Turn on Show FPS and note performance in a repeatable situation, such as the same type of match or practice area.
  2. Start with Epic’s baseline above, then change one setting at a time.
  3. Watch both the FPS counter and how smooth play feels; a high peak number is not the only useful measure if frame times are inconsistent.
  4. If performance is steady and you want a clearer or more detailed image, raise visual settings one at a time and check the result.
  5. If performance is still poor, troubleshoot Windows, drivers, GPU selection, background tasks, airflow, and hardware rather than assuming another in-game setting will solve it.

Epic’s recommendations are a starting point, not an independent benchmark or promise of a particular frame rate. Lower fidelity can help performance, but a PC with headroom may support settings that look better to you.
