Start with four spoiler-light hints below, then reveal the category labels and full answer groups only when you’re ready. This is puzzle #642.
Four hints for Connections #642
- Different ways to impose a penalty, often by charging a fee.
- Small items someone might grab or buy at a store checkout.
- A category involving movies of different lengths.
- Each word can come before a common four-letter noun for a smooth path or route designed for vehicles.
These clues move from broad ideas to a phrase-completion hint. Parade’s March 14 guide gives the first three as “IMPOSE, AS A PENALTY,” “CHECKOUT LINE IMPULSE BUYS,” and “MOVIES OF VARIOUS LENGTHS,” with “_____ ROAD” for the final group. Read Parade’s guide. TechRadar’s shorter prompts are “Pay your dues,” “Grab and go,” “Types of film,” and a word that rhymes with “code.” See TechRadar’s puzzle guide.

#1 Best Overall
- IMPOSE, AS A PENALTY: ASSESS, CHARGE, FINE, LEVY
- CHECKOUT LINE IMPULSE BUYS: CANDY, CHAPSTICK, CHARGING CABLE, MAGAZINE
- MOVIES OF VARIOUS LENGTHS: EPIC, FEATURE, FILM SERIES, SHORT
- _____ ROAD: DIRT, HIGH, ROCKY, SILK
How the groupings fit together
Penalty words
ASSESS, CHARGE, FINE, and LEVY are ways to impose a fee or penalty. Some can function as verbs or nouns, so focus on their shared meaning rather than their grammatical form.
Checkout purchases
CANDY, CHAPSTICK, CHARGING CABLE, and MAGAZINE are different kinds of products. Their connection is the checkout-line impulse-buy context, not a shared product type.
Rank #2
Movie lengths and formats
EPIC, FEATURE, FILM SERIES, and SHORT describe films by length or format. The words are not all interchangeable labels for one runtime; the category gathers several kinds of movie-length descriptions.
Words before “road”
DIRT, HIGH, ROCKY, and SILK complete familiar phrases: dirt road, high road, rocky road, and Silk Road. Unlike the first three sets, this group relies on phrase completion rather than a direct semantic category.
