Spoilers for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree: To burn the Sealing Tree, defeat Messmer the Impaler to obtain Messmer’s Kindling, then reach the Church of the Bud in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh and defeat Romina, Saint of the Bud. The tree is just south of the church. Interact with it and confirm the prompt to trigger the transition into Enir-Ilim.
How do I burn the Sealing Tree?
- Defeat Messmer the Impaler. He awards Messmer’s Kindling, the key item required to burn the tree. If you see a message saying you cannot burn it without kindling, check your key items for Messmer’s Kindling. See the Shadow of the Erdtree walkthrough.
- Reach the Church of the Bud. From the Storehouse route, travel west through the Ancient Ruins of Rauh to the church. The walkthrough provides the full ruin route if you need detailed navigation.
- Defeat Romina, Saint of the Bud. Romina blocks access to the Sealing Tree; defeat her to continue.
- Go south from the Church of the Bud. Leave the church and follow the route beyond it to the black Sealing Tree.
- Interact with the tree and confirm the burn prompt. A cutscene plays, then the game transports you to Enir-Ilim.
The sequence is also summarized in the Sealing Tree reference.
Why can’t I burn the Sealing Tree?
The two progression checks are Messmer’s Kindling and access past Romina. Defeating Messmer provides the item; defeating Romina opens the route from the Church of the Bud to the tree. If one of those steps is incomplete, continue the main route rather than looking for another way to activate the tree.
What should I do before burning the tree?
Burning the Sealing Tree is a main-story transition, not an optional shortcut. It opens Enir-Ilim and changes access through Belurat. The walkthrough warns that most NPCs disappear and many side quests can no longer be advanced afterward, though not every quest is necessarily lost. Finish any side quests you care about before confirming the burn.
