But there is no official franchise ranking, and a player who values exploration, accessible action, or online play may prefer a different entry. This ranking weighs role-playing depth and narrative choice, world and quest design, combat and systems, newcomer accessibility, and solo versus online play. It is an editorial judgment, not a claim of firsthand testing or an official order.
How the Fallout games rank
The list focuses on the major role-playing games, then places the notable strategy and management spin-offs separately. The order reflects the balance of the criteria above; it is not a universal scorecard. GameSpot and GamesRadar+ publish their own editorial rankings, which likewise reflect critical judgment rather than an official franchise order.
- Fallout: New Vegas — Best overall for role-playing choices and faction-driven storytelling.
- Fallout 3 — Best for a first-person journey through a stark, memorable wasteland.
- Fallout 4 — Best for approachable action, exploration, and crafting.
- Fallout 2 — Best for deep classic role-playing and a broad, reactive world, if you can handle older design.
- Fallout — The foundational choice for players interested in the series’ original tone and role-playing structure.
- Fallout 76 — Best for exploring Appalachia with other players in an online Fallout setting.
These placements are most useful as a starting point: the best entry for a newcomer is not necessarily the one with the deepest old-school systems or the most appealing online format.
Which Fallout game should you play first?
- Choose New Vegas if you want factions, role-playing choices, and a story shaped by competing interests.
- Choose Fallout 3 if you want a largely solo adventure built around discovering a dangerous, atmospheric wasteland.
- Choose Fallout 4 if you prefer a more accessible action-RPG structure with crafting and settlement systems.
- Choose Fallout 76 if playing online with friends is a priority; Bethesda describes it as the franchise’s first online-with-friends experience.
- Choose Fallout or Fallout 2 if you welcome older conventions and want the original isometric role-playing approach.
Why each game ranks where it does
1. Fallout: New Vegas
New Vegas takes the top spot because its strongest appeal is the tension between factions and the player’s freedom to decide whom to support, oppose, or leave behind. That makes it the clearest pick for players who value role-playing and narrative choice over streamlined action. Windows Central reported that 869 of 1,501 respondents to its reader poll—58%—selected New Vegas; that self-selected poll records the preferences of its respondents, not a representative measure of quality.

#1 Best Overall
Its older design can feel less welcoming than a newer entry, and players seeking the most modern-feeling combat may prefer Fallout 4. But for a story-led RPG where choices and political consequences are the draw, it is the strongest overall recommendation.
2. Fallout 3
Fallout 3 earns its place for the force of its setting: the ruined Capital Wasteland makes exploration and atmosphere central to the experience. It is a strong fit for someone who wants a solo, first-person introduction to Fallout’s post-apocalyptic world without beginning with the series’ oldest interfaces and conventions.
Its role-playing choices are part of the appeal, but this ranking puts it just behind New Vegas because the latter is the more compelling recommendation for players specifically seeking faction politics and consequential narrative decisions.

3. Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is the most approachable mainline pick here for players who want a more action-forward RPG. Exploration, crafting, and settlement-building broaden its appeal beyond dialogue and quest decisions, while its modern entry point makes it easier to recommend to someone who is unsure about older design.

That accessibility comes with a trade-off: players who rank role-playing flexibility and branching narrative above action and systems may find New Vegas a better match. Choose Fallout 4 when roaming, fighting, and building matter as much as shaping a story.
4. Fallout 2
Fallout 2 is a strong choice for players who want a dense classic RPG, substantial systems, and a world that rewards patience. Its place below the newer first-person games is not a judgment that its role-playing is unimportant; it reflects how much more comfortable those games are as starting points for many newcomers.
Rank #3
- UK version, for ages 16+
Its older interface and conventions are part of the experience, so it suits a player willing to learn them rather than someone looking for contemporary action combat.
5. Fallout
The original Fallout remains the direct route to the series’ roots: an isometric RPG built around a harsher wasteland, character decisions, and older role-playing conventions. It is worth choosing for historical interest or for players who enjoy classic RPG design, but it is a less natural first game for someone seeking a modern, immediately accessible adventure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Fallout 76 belongs on the list for a reason the solo-focused entries cannot match: it is designed around an online setting where players can adventure with friends. Bethesda calls it the franchise’s first online-with-friends experience. That makes it the right recommendation for a group that wants to share a Fallout world, but not the default choice for someone looking primarily for a traditional solo RPG.
Rank #4
Chronology should not dictate the order in which you play. Bethesda’s official timeline starts the games’ formal in-universe chronology with Fallout 76, set 25 years after the Great War of 2077; that is a story-world fact, not a recommendation to begin with it.
Where the Fallout spin-offs fit
The main ranking prioritizes role-playing adventures, so it does not treat every Fallout-branded game as a direct competitor. Fallout Tactics is a strategy-focused spin-off, while Fallout Shelter is a management game. They are better viewed as alternatives for players interested in those formats than as substitutes for a mainline story RPG. Steam’s Fallout listings include both alongside the major RPGs and classic entries; storefront catalogs and availability can change.
How to choose by what you value
| If you care most about… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Role-playing choices and factions | Fallout: New Vegas | Its central appeal is choosing among competing powers and shaping your approach to the conflict. |
| Exploration and wasteland atmosphere | Fallout 3 | The Capital Wasteland makes discovery and mood the core of its appeal. |
| Action, crafting, and accessibility | Fallout 4 | Its action-RPG structure and crafting systems make it the most approachable modern starting point in this ranking. |
| Classic RPG depth | Fallout 2 or Fallout | Both suit players comfortable with older interfaces and conventions. |
| Online play with friends | Fallout 76 | It is the franchise’s online-with-friends entry, rather than a primarily solo recommendation. |
Chronology, editions, and finding a copy
Fallout’s in-universe timeline is different from a sensible play order. Bethesda’s official timeline places Fallout 76 25 years after the Great War of 2077 and identifies it as the chronology’s starting point, but a newcomer can choose based on play style instead.

Bethesda’s catalog and Steam list a range of Fallout games and editions, but platform support, included content, availability, and prices vary by listing and may change. Check the current store page for the specific game and edition you want rather than assuming every entry is available on every platform.
Optional collector note: Fallout Anthology
Bethesda Support describes the 2015 Fallout Anthology as a collectible Fat Man mini-nuke containing five games and official add-ons, with a space reserved for Fallout 4. The support page documents that historical edition; it does not establish that the set is currently in stock or that a copy includes the same contents in every resale listing. Verify the contents and condition of an individual listing before treating it as a complete collection.
