What is a Roblox character?
Roblox uses “avatar” for the global character a player can customize and bring into experiences. The Roblox Marketplace offers avatar bodies and heads, clothing, accessories, animations, and other cosmetic items. You can browse the Marketplace on the web or in the Roblox app.
The word “character” can also mean an NPC or other figure created within a particular experience. This guide focuses on the player avatar, which is the meaning most relevant to customization.
What do R6 and R15 mean?
R6 and R15 are names for classic avatar rig structures. Roblox’s Terms of Use describes R6 as derived from a model constructed from six parts, and R15 from a model constructed from fifteen parts. The labels refer to how the character model is built; they do not describe outfits or individual characters.

Keep the rig separate in your mind from the avatar’s appearance: clothing, accessories, and other cosmetic items are things you equip on an avatar, while R6 and R15 identify a model structure. The cited Roblox materials define the part counts but do not establish that every item or experience supports both rigs.
How to customize a Roblox avatar
Use Roblox’s avatar editor to browse and equip avatar items. The exact layout can differ by device and may change over time.

Open the avatar editor
Open the avatar customization area in the Roblox app or on the Roblox website. Roblox’s browser support guide describes selecting categories such as hats, hair, and faces.

Choose and equip items
Select a category, choose an item, and equip it. The Marketplace is where Roblox users find avatar items to purchase and equip to their global avatar character.

The browser guide also describes changing skin color. Available controls and categories can vary across clients, so follow the labels shown in your editor rather than assuming every device has the same options.

Use device-specific instructions if needed
For Xbox, Roblox documents avatar editing categories including Clothing, Body, Animation, and Outfits in its Xbox avatar help. These are Xbox-specific instructions, not a guarantee that another client uses the same labels or layout.
The browser guide also describes an Advanced option for adding multiple items by asset ID. Because editor controls and limits may change, check the current instructions and your client before relying on a particular limit or workflow.
Why can’t I see or equip an avatar item?
Some avatar items may have regional availability requirements. Roblox says those restrictions can cause characters to appear as grey blocks and recommends trying to equip or unequip the item through the avatar editor. See Roblox’s regional restrictions guidance for details.

Marketplace items versus Creator Store assets
These are different Roblox destinations for different purposes. The Marketplace is for items users can equip on their avatars. The Creator Store provides assets for building experiences, including models, plugins, audio, fonts, images, meshes, and video.
Roblox Support states that Creator Store items cannot be worn on an avatar, unlike clothing and gear. If you want something to equip, look for an avatar item in the Marketplace rather than a development asset in the Creator Store. Roblox explains the distinction in its Creator Store help article.
Can you collect physical Roblox character figures?
Yes, physical Roblox character figures and action figures are a separate kind of collectible. They do not customize your in-game avatar, and a figure should not be assumed to unlock virtual items unless its own documented packaging says so.
A 2025 Canadian trademark journal listing for Roblox includes categories such as action figure toys, accessories for action figure toys, plastic and rubber character toys, construction toys, and molded toy figures. That establishes a toy category, not current stock, a current licensing arrangement, or the legitimacy of any particular seller or listing. Verify the product and seller before buying.
