If you’re using Alternate Start – Live Another Life, ask an innkeeper for rumors and follow the lead to Helgen. You can also travel straight to Helgen. If you installed Alternate Perspective, the trigger is different: rent a room at the Helgen Inn and sleep there.
Start the main quest in Live Another Life
For most starts in Alternate Start – Live Another Life, the main quest does not begin with an active objective. When you’re ready, talk to an innkeeper and ask about rumors. The rumor about Helgen points you there, where the main quest can begin. You can skip the rumor and go to Helgen directly. Live Another Life readme
If you chose the campsite start
The campsite start begins with the Alduin encounter, so you do not need to use the innkeeper rumor trigger.
If you chose a Civil War start
After joining a side and completing its first two missions, proceed to Whiterun. The mod describes the city as closed at this point. If you enter by bribing or persuading a guard, listen for a guard saying Helgen was hit by a dragon; asking what the guard means by dragons directs you to Helgen. If you avoid those guards and enter Dragonsreach without hearing about Helgen, the main quest force-starts in the main hall. Live Another Life readme

Let the Jagged Crown scene play out. The mod warns that skipping it in a Civil War start can prevent the quest from starting and jam the Civil War questline.
Check which alternate-start mod you installed
“Alternate Start” can refer to different mods, and their triggers are not interchangeable. In Alternate Perspective, Helgen remains a functional town until the main quest begins. Talk to the innkeeper at Helgen’s Inn, choose the extra dialogue option to rent a room, then sleep there. Alternate Perspective mod page

Check setup if the alternate start does not work
The current Live Another Life readme lists Skyrim Special Edition 1.6.1130 or later and Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch 4.3.7 or later as requirements. Requirements can change, so check the mod readme for the version you plan to use. Enable subtitles to see the text for the startup quest.
- If a new game follows Skyrim’s vanilla opening rather than your chosen start, verify that the mod is active through Wrye Bash or the official game launcher.
- Check that your game version is supported and that another mod or script is not interfering. The author recommends placing Live Another Life relatively late in the load order and following LOOT’s ordering if you are unsure.
- Do not remove Live Another Life from an active save until its quest is complete and Before the Storm appears in your journal; removing it earlier can break the main quest and Civil War.
Dragonborn DLC starts separately
The trigger described above concerns Skyrim’s base-game main quest, not the Dragonborn add-on. Bethesda says the Dragonborn questline starts soon after you begin The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, following your first consultation with the Greybeards. You can also travel to Solstheim and begin that questline without first speaking to the Cultists. Bethesda Support: Where do I start the Dragonborn DLC content?
