To pair a new DUALSHOCK 4 with a PS4, turn on the console, connect the controller to it with a USB cable, then press the controller’s PS button. After it has enough charge, unplug the cable to play wirelessly.
Pair a new DUALSHOCK 4 with your PS4
- Turn on the PS4.
- Connect the controller to the console using its USB cable. Sony’s instructions describe connecting the controller with the USB cable to complete pairing.
- Press the PS button if the controller is off. The light bar blinks and the player indicator lights up as it connects.
- Unplug the cable when the controller has enough charge. It can then be used wirelessly.
You need to pair a controller the first time you use it and when you move it to another PS4. Sony says a controller pairs with one console at a time, so repeat these steps for each console you want to use. One PS4 can connect up to four controllers.
Choosing a USB cable
If you need a replacement, look for one explicitly described as compatible with DUALSHOCK 4 and capable of data connection. Sony’s cited instructions do not specify a connector type or validate particular third-party cables, so do not assume a charging-only cable will complete pairing.
If the controller will not pair
Sony recommends resetting the controller, then connecting it to the PS4 by USB and pressing PS.

- Turn off the PS4 and unplug it from power.
- Disconnect the controller from its USB cable.
- On the back of the controller, find the small recessed reset button. Use a small tool, such as an unfolded paper clip, to hold it for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to a USB port on the PS4 and press the PS button.
If resetting does not resolve the problem, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs.
