For a sword that works well against most enemies, enchant it with Sharpness. Use Smite when you mainly fight undead mobs, or Bane of Arthropods when arthropods are your focus. To apply an enchantment, use an enchanting table or combine the sword with an enchanted book or suitable item in an anvil.
Which sword enchantment should you choose?

For an ordinary sword, Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are competing enchantment choices. Pick the one that fits the enemies you expect to face: Sharpness for broad coverage, Smite for undead, and Bane of Arthropods for arthropods. How much damage does Sharpness add?
In Java Edition, Sharpness adds 0.5 × level + 0.5 damage. That means Sharpness V adds 3 damage. This formula is specific to Java Edition; it should not be treated as a Bedrock calculation. See the Minecraft Wiki’s Sharpness reference for the Java formula.
Java example: Netherite Sword with Sharpness V
The Minecraft Wiki lists a Java Edition Netherite Sword at 8 attack damage and an attack speed of 1.6. Adding Sharpness V’s 3 damage gives an 11-damage ordinary-hit figure before other effects. The damage-table assumptions are a fully charged attack against an unarmored target; this is not a guaranteed result against an armored enemy or under different combat conditions. How to enchant a sword
- Use an enchanting table: place the sword in the table and choose an available enchantment. The result depends on the options shown for that sword.
- Use an anvil: combine the sword with an enchanted book or suitable item that carries the enchantment you want.

Why your actual damage can differ
A damage figure only makes sense with its combat conditions. Edition, game version, weapon, enchantment level, attack charge, critical-hit status, target armor, and other effects can change the result. The Java figures above use a fully charged hit against an unarmored target, so do not use them as a universal hit value or as a promise about how many strikes a particular mob will take.

The cited references establish the Java Sharpness formula, but not a full current Bedrock formula comparison or a complete calculation for every target and combat effect. For a precise answer in your world, check the edition and version you play and the target’s conditions rather than assuming Java figures apply across editions.
