To make a Potion of Weakness, brew a fermented spider eye directly with a water bottle in a fueled brewing stand. You do not need to make an Awkward Potion first. Add gunpowder afterward if you want a throwable splash potion.
What you need
- A brewing stand
- Blaze powder to fuel the stand
- A water bottle
- A spider eye
- Sugar
- A brown mushroom
If you do not have a brewing stand, Minecraft.net’s guide says to craft one from one blaze rod and three cobblestone. Blaze powder is the stand’s fuel. See the official brewing guide and blaze powder guide.
Craft a fermented spider eye
Combine one spider eye, one sugar, and one brown mushroom in a crafting grid to make a fermented spider eye. Minecraft.net’s spider eye guide covers this ingredient.
Brew the Potion of Weakness
- Use blaze powder to fuel the brewing stand.
- Place the water bottle in one of the lower bottle slots.
- Place the fermented spider eye in the ingredient slot.
- Wait for brewing to finish. The water bottle becomes a Potion of Weakness.
This recipe is a direct water-bottle-to-potion route: do not add Nether Wart or make an Awkward Potion first. Minecraft.net’s official brewing guide identifies fermented spider eye as the ingredient for Weakness.

Make it throwable
To turn the regular potion into a splash potion, put the Potion of Weakness in a lower bottle slot and gunpowder in the ingredient slot. The result can be thrown to apply the effect. Minecraft.net explains the process in How to Brew and Use Splash Potions.
Use it to cure a zombie villager
- Throw a splash Potion of Weakness at the zombie villager.
- Use a golden apple on the affected villager.
- Wait for the curing process to finish.
Minecraft.net’s splash-potion guide describes this sequence. A regular drinkable Potion of Weakness is not the throwable form needed for this use.

Recipe differences in customized worlds
The instructions above describe the standard vanilla recipe. Minecraft Java 26.3 Snapshot 3, published July 7, 2026, documents brewing recipes becoming data-driven, allowing datapacks to add recipes or change vanilla ones. That snapshot note concerns customized worlds using the feature; it does not establish a different standard Potion of Weakness recipe.
