There is no single best armor set for every fight in Black Myth: Wukong. The right pick depends on when you can craft it, which bonuses you can trigger reliably, and whether its defenses suit your current challenge. These six sets are practical choices for distinct play styles—not a damage-tested ranking.
Which armor set is best for my build?
Each set below earns its place by supporting a particular way to play. Bonus descriptions and unlock routes are reported by Gamer Guides and, where linked, PCGamesN; the best fit is the one whose trigger matches what you actually do in combat.

Pilgrim: sprinting and mobile play
Pilgrim is an early option, available at the Guanyin Temple Shrine in Chapter 1. Two pieces increase sprint speed; four pieces build attack while sprinting, up to ten stacks, and the stacks end when you stop sprinting. It suits players who move between targets and can turn that movement into attacks. If you rarely sprint in combat, the larger bonus is less useful.
Galeguard: perfect dodges and spell use
Galeguard becomes available through the Stone Vanguard reward path in Chapter 2. Two pieces grant extra Focus on perfect dodges, while four pieces slightly reduce spell cooldowns after perfect dodges. Choose it when you can land those dodges consistently and use spells often enough to benefit; the set does not deliver the same value to a player who avoids that rhythm.

Ochre: Cloud Step or A Pluck of Many
Ochre is craftable after defeating the Yellow Wind Sage at the end of Chapter 2. Its three-piece bonus gives considerable damage reduction to decoys and duplicates, making it a useful fit when you rely on Cloud Step or A Pluck of Many to keep those copies active. Its appeal is tied to those abilities rather than being a general-purpose recommendation.
Golden Embroidered: Spirit and Vessel offense
Unlocked after Yellowbrow at the end of Chapter 3, Golden Embroidered rewards Spirit and Vessel use. Two pieces increase attack briefly after using a Spirit skill or Vessel; four pieces grant some Qi on critical hits and defeats. It is an offensive, trigger-based option: consider it when those tools are part of your regular combat loop, not simply because a four-piece bonus sounds powerful.

Bull King’s: late-game durability at a cost
Bull King’s is craftable after the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast in Chapter 5’s secret Bishui Cave. Two pieces temporarily grant Defense after you take damage. The four-piece bonus grants Tenacity below half health, but disables Perfect Dodges. That is a substantial trade: it favors durability and accepting hits over perfect-dodge play. It is a late-game choice, not an early progression target.
Folk Opera: Will farming for Deluxe Edition owners
Folk Opera’s four-piece bonus increases Will gained from defeated enemies. The set comes with the Deluxe Edition and is claimed at a Keeper’s Shrine; it is not a standard progression unlock. Treat it as an option for owners who are actively farming, not as a reason on its own to buy an edition upgrade.

How to choose, mix, and upgrade armor
Armor is not a checklist where every new recipe should replace your current gear. A guide updated November 10, 2025 recommends adapting upgrades to the current fight, route, and build. Use these checks to make a practical choice:
- Start with the trigger. Pick a set bonus only if its condition—sprinting, perfect dodges, spell use, or summoned copies—fits your routine.
- Weigh the unlock timing. A powerful late-game recipe cannot help with an earlier boss. Use an available set whose effect supports the challenge in front of you.
- Compare the bonus with the defense you give up. A full set is worthwhile when its larger-piece effect fits your build and its defenses remain adequate. Mix pieces when a smaller bonus or a resistance solves the immediate problem without forcing weaker slots.
- Upgrade with a purpose. Invest in a dependable general-purpose set and one purpose-built bonus rather than chasing every recipe. If a status effect repeatedly decides attempts, prioritize resistance against it; use route-utility pieces when farming or exploring.
- Account for the set-piece cost. Consider how many pieces you need for the bonus and whether upgrading them is worth the materials compared with keeping stronger individual pieces.
How armor fits into progression and completion
Armor crafting first opens at the Guanyin Temple Shrine in Chapter 1. More recipes become available through story progress, bosses, and quests. Gamer Guides’ 2025 update counts 16 armor sets, each with bonuses for wearing multiple pieces. PowerPyx’s August 31, 2024 location guide counts 78 armor pieces and notes that completing all sets is tied to the Mantled with Might trophy or achievement. These are guide-reported inventory and completion facts, not measures of combat performance.

Full collection can require New Game+ progression because of material requirements. There is also a missable piece to watch for: PowerPyx reports that the Venomous Armguard can be missed in Chapter 4 if you defeat the Venom Daoist before destroying its arms; the guide says it can still be obtained in New Game+.
