To use an incantation in Elden Ring, memorize it at a Site of Grace, equip a Sacred Seal, select the spell with the up direction, then press the attack button for the hand holding the seal. Casting also requires FP.
How to cast an incantation
- Memorize the incantation. Rest at a Site of Grace, choose Memorize Spell, then assign an incantation you have learned to an available memory slot. The number of available slots depends on your character’s status. Bandai Namco’s game guide explains the menu and slot system.
- Equip a Sacred Seal. Put a seal in either hand as your casting catalyst. Incantations use seals; sorceries use staffs.
- Select the spell. Tap up on the directional input to cycle through your memorized spells until the incantation you want is displayed.
- Cast with the seal hand. Press the attack input for the hand holding the seal: R1 or RB for the right hand, and L1 or LB for the left hand, using the guide’s controller mapping.
You can cast only if you have enough FP for the selected incantation. Individual spells may also have their own requirements and costs; check the spell’s in-game information if it still will not cast.
If the incantation will not cast
- Confirm that you assigned it through Memorize Spell at a Site of Grace.
- Check that the intended incantation is selected in the spell cycle.
- Make sure a Sacred Seal is equipped in the hand whose attack input you are pressing.
- Check that you have enough FP and meet the selected spell’s displayed requirements.
The controller labels above come from the official guide; PC keyboard and mouse bindings are not listed there. If you are playing on PC, check your current control settings rather than assuming a particular key.
How to restore FP
Rest at a Site of Grace to restore FP. Resting also restores HP and refills your sacred flasks, as described in the official game guide.
